THUNDER BAY – City police issued more than 60 tickets to motorists during the force’s first-day of school enforcement blitz Wednesday.

Officials with the Thunder Bay Police Service say most of the tickets were issued to speeders. Tickets were also handed out during the blitz for seatbelt and child vehicle restraints violations, cell phone use and traffic light violations.

Officers added that many school zones appeared to be surprisingly calm.

Police say the elevated road safety enforcement will continue throughout the month.

This has to continue for more than just a month. Speeding is out of control in this city. The police need to recognize this and deal with it harshly. No excuses, no "let off with a warning".

Here's a suggestion. Other cities have flashing lights on the 40 km/h school zone signs, and you only have to slow down if the lights are on (during school hours). If the lights aren't flashing it's treated as a normal 50 km/h zone.

good job by the po po. people should be used to driving 40km in school zones no problem. living out in calgary, its 30km. which is difficult for me even after a year being here when i'm so accustomed to thunder bay.

Go ahead people, keep speeding. You know what keeps me going the limit? My hereditary roots of being a cheap slovak. My last ticket was in 1989 for not wearing a seatbelt. When I saw that $110 fine I become a poster boy for belts! I WILL NOT give my money for the sake of breaking the rules. Just ain't worth it.

All I have to say is, Everyone who was ticketed deserves it!! and you have NO right to complain about the ticket plus any points off your license.

In school zones during school hours? GREAT! Go for it! Ticket every last person more than 5km/h over. Outside of school hours? 50km/h.

Community safety zones? You know.... those ones placed all over the city nowhere near any schools, seemingly randomly? Those need to be gotten rid of completely. They are nothing but a money grab.

Those commenting that Thunder Bay is filled with speeders are only partially right: Thunder Bay is also filled with exceedingly low speed limits that do not match with reality. As a cop if they follow them when off duty, and I think you'll find that virtually none do, as they are rediculous.

Catch up to the rest of the province Thunder Bay! Raise the speed limits, time the lights on major arteries.

The funny thing is that all the speeders will complain and whine to all their friends about how unfair their tickets were. The bottom line is that you all DESERVE them for breaking the law and potentially putting childrens lives at risk

Every year its the same thing.. what is so hard to understand about going 40 in a school zone people??

Ive slowed down to 40 in zones and have the idiot behind me tailgate me, I just keep going 40. It is going to take an accident to unfortunately make people aware of this problem.

What is the hurry?
With school opening up and drivers needing to be more careful, its simple common sense.

Just want to make a general statement here folks.

Speeding is not against the law, it is a violation of the highway traffic act which has a fine system in place for infractions like speeding. Technically you can travel up to 49km faster then the posted limit but if you get caught you will be fined and have punishment against your driving privileges. Where the law enters into it is when you cause damage, excessive speeding (the new stunt driving law), bodily harm or cause death. Then it is a whole new ball game to deal with.

Escroft says:
I have enough money that being hit with a 95 dollar speed limit fine is next to nothing for me. If I am going 20 km/h over the limit, it's because I am on a main avenue where the speed shouldn't be 50 in the first place. Water Street needs to be 70, same with Oliver between where the graveyard starts at the intersection of Balmoral all the way to the beginning of the highway. In manitoba, it would be 70. So I'm going 70-75. Bump the speed up a little bit, and I won't have to speed a bit. And if you say: "Then you'll just go 80-85" , not true. I drive the design speed of the road. If the road can handle 70, it should be 70.

Though I always do 40 for school zones. It's just common sense. Kids walking across the street, not looking where they're going, not crossing the street paying attention, too busy on their little toys their parents had to get them, making them oblivious to the dangers of vehicles around them. And no matter how much they're at fault, it's ultimately yours. I'll do 40

buzzerd says:
The War on Speed, it's kind of like the Ware on Drugs....just less effective. I think more people would pay attention to the 40km/hr if it was during school hours only, even at that I drive by a school just about every day at different times and almost never see a child outside.

the city will not change the speed on a road that cuts through a residential area. let alone, where side streets are able to turn onto against traffic. really think about what you people are saying about increasing the speed limits. keep dreaming, it ain't gonna happen unless they completly change roads to one way and have mediums down the centre.

brooky says:
When I was a kid, there was no reduced speed zones around schools. And back then we all walked to school. And walked home and back to school at lunch break. I remember doing this even in kindergarten. Never did I hear of a traffic incident involving a child walking to school. Today, everyone takes the bus to school. And someone, somewhere along the way, in their superior wisdom, decided that a 40 km speed zone within a few blocks of a school would be safer than a 50 km speed. If that's true, then wouldn't a 30 km speed be safer than 40 km? So now you have all of these drivers staring at their speedometers, making sure that that they are only driving 50 km/per hour (Not a typo. We all slow down to 50 in a school zone), instead of looking out for the children? Nobody walks to school anymore. The signs and enforcement surely cost a fortune. Lets back up 20 years and get rid of these speed traps. Thats all that they accomplish.

My boys walk to school and so does a third of his school. Motorists don't care about pedestrians until they hurt someone. I would rather have them get hit when a car is travelling 40 instead of 50 or more.

Then we would also have to get rid of cell phones / texting, in car DVD, GPS and all the other distractions that keep peoples eyes off the road. Oh yeah and we would also have find a way to bring back people's respect for others and somehow erase their sense of entitlement in believing some rules of the road don't apply to them.

We gotta look out for the kiddies these days. They are getting more and more carefree and reckless, and the parents are just getting more over protective. Reduced speeds... who cares, slow down. It's for the kids!

If the officers gave them suspensions instead of tickets those people would never speed again and our roads would be safe. Would you speed if you were to get your license taken away?

trent, while your idea is a good one, I can only imagine the uproar spending that kind of money would cause. I could name a few on this website that would have a stroke at the mere thought of it.
The school zones aren't new, and they aren't going away either. Is it that hard to slow down? Sure, it's inconvenient but really, is it that hard?
9/7/2012 9:45:07 AM
Me n My Opinion says:
Assuming the school zone is 300 meters long, it will take you 5.4 seconds longer by slowing down from 50 to 40 km. For some reason I doubt 5.4 seconds is going to make much difference in anybody's schedule.

Speeders are just egotistical narcissists. Hammer them and hammer them hard. Way to go T. Bay police dept. You can drive from Current River, all the way to the Bowater Mill. and you'd be lucky if you gained five minutes. But your chances of getting into an accident would increase a hundredfold. So, whats your point, Escroft, Brooky? Your not that important, that you should be allowed to endanger my safety, or anyone elses. Yeah your the ones running yellow and red lights in your trucks and SUV's, or anything else that you may be driving. Relax, you'll live longer, and so might someone else.
