A major national construction firm is being brought in to help speed up construction of the luxury condominium going up at the Thunder Bay Country Club.

Dowland Contracting has been enlisted by local developer Robert Zanette. Dowland will take over construction management for the project, which has encountered several delays over the past months.

In a written statement, Zanette states he couldn't be more pleased to partner with the national company, which is best known for its work on large-scale projects in Western Canada and in the Arctic.

With the partnership now in place, construction of the 88-unit condo building is expected to accelerate in the coming weeks.

Who was the first contractor on this project? I don't think that there was one. Zanette tried to handle it himself as far as I know. Correct me if I'm wrong. There are many local contractors that could have handled this project on time and on budget from the start. It's a shame that outsiders have been brought in when Thunder Bay has a highly skilled trade workforce at it's disposal. Glad I'm not buying one of these rushed units.

How are they rushed if the project has been delayed? If anything, I see this as a commitment to ensuring the best quality. Do our local contractors really know how to build luxury condos? We've only just started to build them this year!

I was involved with the King Arthur suites luxury condos almost 20 years ago. You're a little behind the times.

Nope, you're incorrect. There was a prominent local contractor doing work on the site this year and a fatality occurred, MOL orders issued and the project stumbled.
Surprised you don't remember the unfortunate occurrence brooky. A young man was run over and died on the job site by a piece of heavy equipment.

Of course I remember this unfortunate incident. I've worked in the construction industry for over 35 years and occourances like this deeply affect me. The young man that was killed on site was working for a sub contractor. I'm still don't know who was the general contractor at the start of the project. Please tell.

I happen to know a few things about this project. All due respect, I think there's a bit of misinformation there Brooky.

While Zanette may have handled things himself, he has a crew and many subcontractors. So essentially he was the 'local contractor.' There are other projects on the go for Zanette and the prudent choice was to bring in a CM contractor.

Also, as far as I know, Dowlands is new in Thunder Bay - albeit with a national name - and is operated and employed with all local people. The guys at Dowland have been building here for years, just under a new banner now. They basically brought the name here, which is a good thing for tbay.

Lastly, I think the fact they took time to choose a contractor, and looked at several proposals shows they're paying attention to detail rather than rushing.

Just saying... It's a cool project. Dowland is all local. Zanette has done some very good things in town. What's with the nay-saying?

Most contracters in the city are union. Dowland I believe is non union. Tk's for supporting local people Zanette.

Where exactly are you living? It must not be Thunder Bay. I'm not so sure there are 'many' local (Thunder Bay) contractors that could deliver the project on time and on budget.
