Lofty goal: United Way campaign aims for $2.6 Million

Year after year the United Way of Thunder Bay sets a more ambitious campaign goal.

And year after year they manage to vault past it, no matter how high they set the bar. Campaign chairwoman Carol Busch says 2012 should be no different.

Busch and her campaign team on Friday unveiled this year’s lofty target, $2,602,012, which as always will take hard work to meet, she said. But, she’s confident they will.

“As you can tell by the enthusiasm in the room today, we are going out running to top off $2.6 million in 2012,” she said, after the charitable organization’s annual campaign launch breakfast.

“We’re ready to go.”

The target, about $77,000 more than last year’s goal is needed to fund 28 agencies and 67 programs, Busch went on to say, without which many would no longer be able to function.

“What we have to weigh out is what the need is in our community. It’s an ever-growing need,” Busch said.

“We have to keep that in mind when we set our goal that is indeed a stretch.”

Those dollars are being stretched even thinner this year, with the Thunder Bay and Area Disaster Relief Committee attempting to raise $5 million for victims of the May 28 flood disaster that hit the city, but neither Busch nor campaign vice-chairman Walter Flasza believe they’re competing for the same dollars.

“We have a very caring community and I think members of our community look at the fact our agencies are there to assist those who were affected by the flooding disaster and that they will be needing support on a go-forward basis,” she said.
“I think everybody will dig a little bit deeper this year.”

Story continues after video ...

Flasza said the people of the city have shown time and time again they’re willing to step up to the plate to help those in need.
And each year the United Way is not alone on the charity in the three months leading up to Christmas.

“This year we had a terrible incident back in May with the rain and the flooding. Other years we’ve had other similar types of disasters, maybe not so close to home,” Flasza said.

“We don’t look at it being competition. I think we look at it as an opportunity to work together. Let’s talk about the flood. The United Way agencies, there’s a long list of them that were ready to respond to the crisis, virtually a minute after it happened, simply because they had the funding and support from the community that allowed them to respond,” said Flasza, pointing out both the Red Cross and St. John Ambulance.

That’s precisely the thought process of Harold Wilson, the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce president.

“Thunder bay really pulls together in a time of crisis. And when people are willing to come together, anything is possible,” he said, encouraging the early morning breakfast crowd to continue to donate to the United Way.

“Change starts here,” said Mayor Keith Hobbs, echoing the campaign slogan.

“It is the responsibility of all of us to make a difference. By working together we can make Thunder Bay a better place through the United Way.”

Let me see now, $2.6 million for this charity, a great cause of course. Plus $4.1 million a goal needed for the Disaster Relief fund. Why is Fletcher missing from this group picture? He usually is front and center for these photo ops. I guess with the failure of the DRF groupies its time to run and hide. Gonna be hard to raise over $6 million for those two alone. And one has a deadline of 3 months time. Gonna be a very interesting hour. Remember to be the best in the world.

Instead of telling the world why we can't... why not encourage people to try? The United Way has been setting loftier goals each year... and often surpassing them. Why shouldn't they continue?

If the United Way wants 2.6 Million dollars and the city wants 5 million where do they think the overtaxed people will get that from. Our economy is in the toilet and money doesn't grow on trees. If people don't have insurance to cover these kind of losses then we all lose by having to pay higher insurance and higher taxes. Thanks a bunch all you uninsured or underinsured people.

Obviously inflation makes cost rise on an annual basis but has the United Way considered looking at the merger of charities it supports?

Charities all need a couple things: Money, volunteers and support. There are so many that do almost the same job here in Thunder Bay and the region it amazes me that they haven't come together to push there goals since they are so alike. If we merge these thinkers/doers together we might have a smaller number of charities but they will be better off financially, economically and with a larger pool of volunteers.

6.7 million is a lofty goal for November 31st, and December 31. If they are serious about reaching it then they are going to need to go out of town to reach it.

I agree leafsfanantic, my first time as well. What an inspiring video. Shows how even if I donate $1 a week off my paycheck, I am helping alot of agencies here in our city.

I have always wondered...WHO pays for this breakfast? The balloons? The closing lunch? All the trinkets?

Why not just put THAT money into the pot toward the GOAL instead of the meals and the parties?

Reminds me of the TV ads to send in money...and they will send you a T-shirt. WHY? I don't NEED a T-shirt. If I needed a T-shirt I would buy one, insteading of sending my money to the charity.

Jus' sayin'.

In response to justa wonder, I wondered myself as this was my first time attending. The hotel sponsors it, the balloons are sponsored as is the flowers by Rollasons. I discovered we have a great support of many people and businesses. You should have seen the list of businesses who help out the campaign

Care to clarify this comment? If I'm not mistaken, most of the people there were volunteers (as opposed to paid employees).

I earn 12 an hour and find enough to donate about 10 a week to various charities, mostly change I drop in boxes and cans. Surely you can do that?

Like myself TSB, you are below the poverty line and are entitled to actually accept charity rather than give to it. You are very generous and God bless.

Oh Dandy, If you ever worked for a not for profit org, you would know that there is not alot of money paid for employees. Alot of it depends on contract work, because orgs need to secure funding to keep positions. next time you access an agency for help, think about it. If there were no workers, they wouldnt be able to deliver programs. Organizations are constantly looking for more funding to keep servives going.

Still havent heard from my adjuster in over a month.

I got a $2500 advance a few weeks after the flood, with nothing but promises since then.

When I get some cash from the insurance company, maybe I'll donate some to the cause, but until then, look somewhere else for donations!

All I know is it will be a shortfall when collecting for the Christmas donations this year as many already gave thier extra cash to the Sally Ann.

Should be intresting.

Would United Way ever lessen its goal? Even in the face of competing needs? What do you call it when more and more money is desired?

Do the math. There are 28 local agencies they fund, not just one agency. It takes alot of money to run programs and services. These agencies are the one with needs!

Always holding out their hands, promising to lend a hand.

But never forgetting to take their share with both of their own hands.

I will never give one cent to anything the United Way is involved in.
