The city’s unemployment rate rose slightly in August, according to new numbers released by Statistics Canada.

The recent employment statistics shows that this area had an unemployment rate of 6.3 per cent in August, which is slightly above the 6.1 per cent recorded in July.

That puts the city below the Ontario average of eight per cent. It’s also below the national average, which sits at 7.3 per cent.

so last month when the rate fell slightly the reason by our resident armchair economists in here was that it was because people were giving up... now what? They all decided to try looking again?

Here some more information from stats Canada.

"The average unemployment rate over the summer for students aged 20 to 24 was 11.3%, while it was 18.1% for those aged 17 to 19"

All while larger amount of debt is being piled by students and young people. First time home owners are finding it harder to buy a house due to new regulations and tuition increased have greatly surpassed inflation. LU tuition alone this year increased 8% which is 1.3% as of July.

I couldn't find the numbers for how many workers started searching again but Ontario lost 25,000 jobs in August. Of which 3,000 will likely come from RIM shedding jobs to become slimmer.

Where do they get these numbers? How accurate can they be?

Reply...to "TBDR"...your post makes no sense...but then again it seems to be your forte, if anyone of the posters here seem to come across like they have all the answers...you would top that list in my opinion.

The reported 6.3 is not the actual/accurate figure for the city...there have been many who have fallen from the records because their benefits have run out their term...keeping in mind that jobs losses have been going on for the past 8 years...and I am more than happy to remind you of the 80 jobs lost at Global Sticks, the 27 jobs lost at Canadian Blood Services...but hang on...jumping ahead to September we are expected to loose another 100 jobs when one of our homes for the aged shuts its doors.

I'll stop there..as I would not want to bore you too much with my accurate figures.

Why is it always such doom and gloom coming from you boyjimmy? Agreed the unemployment stats may be flawed, but are they only flawed in Thunder Bay, or does the rest of the universe not suffer from similar innacurracies.

By the way, you running for mayor next time? Again?

jimmyboy, once more you lay waste to logic and reason. Congratulatons on your consistency. 1000 more jobs at Bombardier Hundreds more in health hundreds in construction, including highways, courthouse but guess what. Next month we will gain some jobs and lose some jobs. That is the economy, and every city has people whose benefits have ended or have given up looking.
jimmyboy conveniently forgets that STATS CAN calculates these figures using a standardized format that makes regional comparisons and city to city comparisons poossible.
NOw I hope I haven't bored jimmy with accurate figures. The only thing missing in his posting is bashing the mayor or some of our elected officials. he must be having an off day
oh jimmy, for the past several years our rate has been below both the provincial and national averages. I guess that accurate statement is ignored in your world of economics. I continue to be in awe of your worldly view from the planet stupeedoo. Please head back there
