The city is expected to announce the identity of the waterfront hotelier at a news conference Wednesday morning.

The City of Thunder Bay has scheduled a local news conference for Wednesday at 11 a.m., which organizers have titled Waterfront Hotelier Announcement.

Few other details were revealed in a news release that announced the pending event, however Mayor Keith Hobbs, Coun. Mark Bentz, and Re Solve Group Inc. President Gisele MacDonald are named as people taking part in the event.

It is widely believed that Delta Hotels will be revealed as the waterfront hotelier, a rumour that followed speculation from sources who spoke with tbnewswatch.com in 2011.

More speculation that Delta would be the hotelier surfaced after a webpage was discovered on the Brook McIlroy Urban Design and Planning website. The page in question detailed how BMI/ Pace was retained by Delta and Resolve group to begin the design and construction process for what was then said to be an eight-floor, 102 room waterfront hotel in Thunder Bay.

That website page has since been removed.

tbnewswatch.com will have more on this story following the news conference Wednesday.

READ MY LIPS ~ Unlike 95% of the folks that will post on this particular thread subject, i have no agenda in regards to this project or the marina. THIS HOTEL WILL BE A HUGE SUCCESS !!!!

Mark Bentz among others that supported this project deserves a lot of credit for his vision and foresight. The Hotel & Marina will be the "go to" place to visit and stay in Thunder Bay ~ no doubt about it !!!!

hotdog says:
If this new hotel is the go to place to stay for visitors, then it will be at the expense of every other established local hotelier in the area. Lack of accomodation for visitors was never a problem that needed to be solved.

patti says:
You have no clue or idea of what you're talking about ~ Thunder Bay has one of the highest occupancy rates not only in Ontario but all of Canada.
Hotel chains generally don't build hotels for the sake of building hotels, they hire professional consultants(not hotdogs) who do do market analysis and feasibility studies. Hence 3 more hotels being built in Thunder Bay very soon (Airport, Superstore, and Marina locations) These projects will all be worth millions of dollars and employ hundreds of people.

In an unrelated story (wink), Brook McIlroy study picks downtown Port Arthur for multi-plex.

panzerIV says:
You do know that the hotel would be successful even if the city wasn't planning on building a multiplex. Would the company like the multiplex downtown? I'm sure they are overjoyed that it could but the low vacancy rates in Thunder Bay mean that its a gold mine to make money more then any multiplex or arena could ever do.

Remember that this company has been working out the details for years. Long before any serious consideration was given to the multiplex.

Patti: the issue was never one that would have stopped development of condos or a hotel. Yes, as it stands now the development will succeed however in the beginning we were told of a MUNICIPLE PARK development and not a commercial/residential subdivision. There is plenty of room so that taxpayer money was not used to develop new land for this. Just think, what the park would have looked like if we didn't spend all that money to fill the lake in.

It would really help if the staff at Tbnewswatch were professional enough to educate themselves on things that even myself... a regular citizen who is not employed fulltime in the media sector which of whom should be fully aware the photo accompanying this article is of one of the two condo towers and not the hotel. The hotel looks totally different. More disinformation and misleading images on behalf of our third rate news establishments.
9/10/2012 5:24:23 PM
sky high says:
get the chip, the staff at tbnewswatch never claimed that the building in this picture was a hotel. All they are doing is showing a shot of the waterfront, where the hotel is going to be built. You, however, use terrible grammar. 'Media sector which of whom' is horrible English. Please don't comment again unless you take some English lessons. Have a nice day.

Sky High, seems you are a bit slow at reading the news. The photo at first had a description that it was of the hotel. They have changed it after posting my comment. So you are incorrect in your first comment. Secondly, my first language is french and I have never been to an english class and believe my english to be much better than an average english university graduate's. You make yourself sound foolish. So, in regards to your comments, none of it was of any value and was entirely false. Next time educate yourself on the facts before speaking. I did my homework. Did you? *laughable*
9/11/2012 12:30:02 AM
sky high says:
You can believe all you want, but just because you think your English is better than a university graduate's that doesn't mean it is. Wishful thinking, chip. A university graduate would never make your awful errors. And my first language is French as well, so you really have no excuse. lol, better stick to French forums chip.
9/11/2012 7:54:37 AM
sky high says:
And in fact, chip, your English is not even up to snuff with a grade 4 student, never mind a university graduate. University students don't graduate if they write like you. So quit being so petty by knocking the very media you depend on to educate you.

You should really get rid of that chip on your shoulder. It's annoying.

At this point, after being held in secrecy for so long...I suspect many people (obviously not everyone) don't really care anymore who it is.
A news conference for it though. hehe

Now let the debate begin on how the Hotel guests and the Condo owners are going to access the properties ? I can see this costing in the 10's of millions .

Yippee, a hotel. That'll sure increase the quality of our lives here in the bay :/

Can someone PLEASE give us something to do on our lakeshore!

So the spalsh pad/rink, skate park, art gallery, picnic area, walking trails, Tia Chi circle, outdoor concert area, playground etc... do nothing for the quality of our lives?

"NOTE TO READERS: Photo caption has been changed to more accurately reflect the concept drawing that accompanies this news story." - Really! I am looking forward to see first hotel of this type with balconies. I've never seen something like this before but there might be some somewhere.
9/10/2012 7:32:19 PM
tsb says:
The Delta in Winnipeg has balconies... Delta Chelsea in Toronto also has balconies. Delta Ottawa has balconies too. The old Holiday Inn on Brodie Street had a couple balconies, and the Shoreline Motel a few blocks away from the hotel we're discussing has balconies, too.

patti: of course it will work. They were given without public tender (600k) the best real estate in Thunder Bay and then the taxpayer payed for their infrastructure...who couldn't make a go of that. All profits going west to boot.

How can this city be dying? Looks at the homes going up, all the new businesses moving up, construction everywhere. Sure sign of a flatlined city I suppose.

Just another step forward in developing a world class waterfront. For decades our waterfront was the draw for tourism and commerce until that died and we spent too long debating how to recover. Finally Thunder Bay is rediscovering its identity. Stay positive Tbay'ers.

Well it is only 2 years in the making of this "BIG REVEAL"....which is laughable on any given day.

and to "TBDR"....I believe all you know is "Sarcasm"....and "Taking Jabs" at other posters....which is a clear indication of a most feeble mind to say the very least. :)
9/11/2012 9:26:02 AM
TBDR says:
no... actually its just an indication I don't take any of you seriously. 90% of the regulars on this forum, yourself included, come off like utter buffoons. All you do is whine and complain at every corner as if the sky was crumbling down on top of us. 26 new housing starts in August, one of the lowest unemployment rates in Canada, and 3 brand new 3 star hotels being built. Yep we're being managed into the ground all right.

Why did TB News even bother to run this story. All it does is fuel baseless speculation.
Why not just wait until the news conference itself, and report on the actual news.

I do not disagree with a hotel near the Marina. Why does it need to be plopped in the present location? Keep the Marina for the people - there are already too many buildings within the compound, and it is now congested. Sadly, given the size of the existing park, it now looks messy. Having been to numerous waterfronts throughout the world, I can honestly say that this is an example of the poorest planning that I've ever encountered. I am curious to see how long it takes for the owners of the new condos to complain about the noise and traffic from the "regular folk" who utilize the Marina. Yes, the wading pool (or so-called splash pad) and other locations are nice - but five years down the road, what will the situation be?

TBDR, stop acting like a pathetic little man and make some sense, you are a laughing stock!!

what is a "pathetic little man" exactly? Are you saying vertically challenged people are pathetic? Or can you just not think of a better insult?
9/12/2012 2:09:50 AM
commonsense says:
I agree with jay-ded that yes, the park is too crowded, and time will tell how much effect private residential in OUR park will have on the public activities we enjoy in OUR park.
a hotel and condos was an easy fix" to bring more people into the park, which was the original justification for hotel and condos.
Why not a public facility, like the North House Folk School, located in Grand Marais, or a Great Lakes Visitor Centre with restaurant included?
We spend millions to create and remediate land we then sold at a loss, all for the "privilege" of having private development.

And if you think it's crowded now, wait till the hotel and condos are built in the fenced area past the CN Station, PLUS another private "market" building beside splash pad, and a future commercial building in the grass area where the colorful lawnchairs are.
Not much left for the people who paid for it all!
Of course, the CN station was also leased for privat development for a mere 100 years, so that's lost also.

anvil of crom says:
yeah marina park is real crowded, check it out october to april. I mean ARE U KIDDING ME??!
i spend time down there year round believe me its not crowded even mid summer. It gets busy at times ie blues fest, but crowded ...no.
If you had some common knowledge you would have some common sense about this.
