Opportunity missed?

Thunder Bay residents missed an opportunity to have the Centennial Botanical Conservatory re-opened by Christmas.

Council in August approved recommendations to partially reopen the conservatory by installing a safety net to protect against hazards from above. Last February reports of falling glass forced the closure of the Centennial Botanical Conservatory, though council recently voted to speed up the reopening process and install the $76,000 net as soon as possible.

But instead, at Monday night’s meeting, council overturned a decision that could have had the conservatory open as soon as December instead of Jan. 1, 2013. The vote ended in a tie and thus was lost, with Northwood Coun. Mark Bentz absent from the vote.

The work order will have to wait until Sept. 24 when administration is expected to come forward with a report on the conservatory.

Red River Coun. Brian McKinnon wanted to have a recorded vote on the conservatory because he said he has issues spending that amount of money on a facility that’s been neglected for 45 years.

“I think we can do something better with that money,” McKinnon said. “I fully support a conservatory. There are different ways to make it safer or maybe put the money forward for a new conservatory. That’s what I would like to see. I know three or four other councillors I have spoken with are thinking the same way.”

He said he hoped the report coming to council will give recommendations to construct a new conservatory as well as what the cost will be.

He added that the motion probably would have passed had Bentz been at council.

I've lived here my entire life and I'm saddened by this. We all know it would have been great to have it open as soon as possible.
Now the money will just be wasted on some goofy art project.

call the conservatory "art" and there'll be no problem finding money to fix it.

Real shame to let such an asset basically crumble to the ground, as we are told. Doesn't anyone at the city take responsiblity? We have many of the same faces over the years at city hall and nobody says 'my/our bad' or 'we should of done this'. Any local politician heard of taking responsibility - perhaps the alderman of that ward? Real shame to see city assets uncared for - and worse yet keep building new ones when exisitng one are neglected. Changes are needed.

ok, i love how everyone is crying, saying they will go there if it was opened, is this just because it is closed? No one went there, maybe travellers, once a month, but its been the same since i was born, and i go often, like all the time to take photos of flowers, so yes i am upset that is closed, but if we can get a new state of the art one, that will bring visitors, why not? Everyone in this city is so quick to speak up, yet its never at the right times.

Where is the accountability of the department manager responsible for this building.???

Obviously if this building was kept up from the get go we would not be talking about it now.

More stall tactics is all this adds up to in the end...keeping in mind this issue is now going on 9 months old...the city council and administration is moving at the speed of snot in dealing with this situation.!

What a sorry bunch we have occupying city hall...and it runs from HOBBS all the way down.

Oh Thunder Bay...why are the decision makers so progressively backward.

It seems like no matter what news story is posted on this site there are people who can't resist throwing up that same old tired straw man about the money spent on art. Even if the city had spent all the money (it didn't, directed gov. grant)on the art, this is exactly the kind of hick small-town mentality that is so prevalent in T-Bay and is keeping us from developing into a destination rather than a departure point. Try leaving Thunder Bay even once in your lives and visiting other cities that are considered tourist destinations. I assure you that your eyes will be opened. Duluth is only a few hours away. Go walk around a bit if it isn't too terrifying for you. See what a developed marina / waterfront and some civic pride (most important part) looks like.

Duluth is 2 hours away from a major metropolitan area (Minneapolis/St,Paul) which draws a great majority or its tourists. Thunder Bay is and most likely always will be too isolated to be a major tourist destination.

Spazz I pay taxes to this city, and like everyone else paying, them we are entitled to our opinions on how it should be spent. Calling people hick's who do not agree with your 'spend spend spend' mentality is just arrogant.

Perhaps low residential taxes would encourage people to stay in this city over some bent iron rods at the waterfront? See what I did there?

I see exactly what you did there.. you ignored the fact that the bent iron rods were put up with the help of a gov. grant that was meant for things like art. If they had not spent it that way it would have been taken back. Forget Duluth and go see that even Red Rock is working on making thier waterfront a nice place to go. Everyone driving cross-country comes through Thunder Bay. Why not make it an attractive idea to stop and spend some money while they do it?

umm... the heartbeat 'art' in front of the new EMS HQ cost more than it would have cost to install this net to protect people and reopen the Conservatory as stated in this article.

Good thing we have a hunk of steel in front of the EMS HQ instead of a functional conservatory

So what? a new Conservatory on the Waterfront!
If that is your plan City Council you are crazier than I thought...a greenhouse on the coldest, wind swept shoreline in the country with No Parking.
News flash, NOT everything belongs on the waterfront. Is this something else you promised the developer OR is this something else he has demanded?

In Toronto, there is another conservatory that is "sister" to ours. Look at the photos and see how it compares. Ours is very well tended, but whoever is in charge has done nothing as far as gradually adding new elements. The seasonal displays are always beautiful, it would just be nice to see some new things, more on the grounds, add some classes on plant care, extend the hours, etc.

The City had a consultant study the building and recommend work that would have cost about $861,000, but would be paid back in 5.5 - 11 years in energy savings.
Why did they not act?
Several Councillors have already commented that "it would be nice to see this at the waterfront", so therein lies the reason for the neglect. They needed an excuse to move it. So, really they're not looking to save $100,000, they're just wanting something worth doing at the waterfront.

While I often smell backroom kickback deals coming from city council, Building a new conservatory isn't such a bad idea, maybe?

I wonder how much over bid the job would cost, and which council members will get fancy new driveways installed.

I will be interested to see what happens on September 24. Council says they want to hear from the public on this issue but it is like everything else - they have their minds made up already. Mark Bentz is pushing to have it at the Waterfront as is Andrew Foulds. Rebecca would like to get rid of it and put up condos. That piece of property is quite valuable and because it is (must) be owned by the City, they will try to get some $$$ for it. It all comes down to $$ ladies and gentlemen for the Council's Renew Fund aka Waterfront Development.

Seems that if anything comes up that will be good for our city then it is not followed through with.If is a lousy proposal then this councell goes ahead and passed what ever through. Time for this city councill to start listening to what the people of Thunder Bay want instead of always trying to keep up with the jone's of other cities.
