Council staying away from hiring of new HR director

City council decided to take a hands off approach in the hiring a new director of Human Resources and Corporate Safety.

The majority of council voted against a motion that would have a member of council sitting on the recruitment committee alongside city manager Tim Commisso. Councillors Rebecca Johnson, Trevor Giertuga and Joe Virdiramo voted in favour of the motion.

Giertuga said it’s important to have someone on the recruitment committee because the director would be the person councillors would approach if they have any concerns with Commisso.

Coun. Andrew Foulds disagreed and said it would have been a real mistake to mix administration with politics.

“We should not let politics get involved,” Foulds said.

“I sit here as a councillor to make political decisions. It’s a bad move to combine administration with council. It’s not our role to hire senior managers.”

Mayor Keith Hobbs shared Foulds opinions and said it almost appeared as if council was micromanaging.

Given council is supposed to somewhat oversee how this city is run, they should be involved in the selection. Or is this there way of saying "wasn't me" in he event of a blow up somewhere down the road. Mixing administration and politics is there job.
But what do I know.... I'm supposed to believe everything they say and do is for the betterment of the city..

I think it would be interesting if someone did a 'Family Tree' of staff/employees at City Hall and within City department, in particular Summer Employees! The nepotism is remarkable.

Once again it would appear that Mayor Keith Hobbs is lost in his own world...as is Andrew Foulds...each and every major decision that is made by city manager Tim Commisso and the other high ranking members of administration must be brought to city council for final approval....duh HOBBS...that is the way our city system works...where have you been???

So in essence MICRO-MANAGING is on the city council meeting agenda each and every Monday evening...seriously what does HOBBS and company believe they are actually doing at these meetings...I would love to hear his answer.

Read the Municipal Act. It is not the role of Council to hire any other manager than the CAO. The CAO is Council's only employee. The rest are employees of the CAO. It is Council's job to manage the CAO.

Fould: "make political decisions" - I only wish you did. How about Global Sticks, Regen and the other business failures of our city council that handed over millions to private businesses. How is that politics - unless politics to you is handouts to friends that never get paid back. Gosh I think you must have short and long term memory loss. You'll never live this quote down.

Hobbs: its time to re-read you elction platform / promises and stick to it OR at least admit you have changed your tune. You promised accountability and fiscal responsibility but now your refer to it as micro-managing. wow what a 180.
