THUNDER BAY – The city experienced another active month on the housing starts front.

According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the month of August saw a significant increase in new home builds. There were 26 new single-family home starts last month, up from 16 the year before.  And for the year to date, there have been 134 home starts.

That's a 17 per cent increase over the first eight months of 2011.
There were also 12 new apartment units started last month, up from 10 in August of last year.

CMHC spokesman Warren Philp said it seems builders are responding to the city's historically low vacancy rates for apartments.

The herd is running the fastest just before they go over the cliff. Don't expect this low interest rate fueled building binge to last folks.

Why not? They are expecting to need 6000 new houses in Thunder Bay alone for the mining boom that is coming (if it reaches its full potential) even in Atikoken they are in need of 500 new homes. If anything expect it to get busier are more companies move in to build.

forget it panzer... if there were 300 housing starts in a month, these buffoons would still be saying the sky was falling

What planet are you from Panzer?

Stock holders will not let the minerals be extracted from these mines because it will drive the prices down which means they lose money.
There is not going to be a boom in Thunder Bay or in this region for that matter.
If it does happen, most of us will be dead.
Its going to take 20 years or more just to get a 400km road built with hydro services to the mining point.
It just reeks of a huge price tag that the province does not want to swallow.
And we know the federal government really does not give a darn.
Ask the teachers, they got a wage freeze, lost some sick days, etc.
Cry with them perhaps.
Maybe Honeymoon Suite will play a free concert for everyone here.

City management is foaming at the mouth waiting to dispatch MPAC to bring in all that property tax and give themselves a raise. If I see MPAC anywhere near my place I'm dispatching the hounds.
