People who suffered physical or sexual abuse in the residential school system have until Wednesday to file an application to the federal government.

The Independent Assessment Process will conclude on Wednesday. It is one element of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, which is the largest class action settlement in Canadian history.
The settlement, struck in 2007, aims to bring a fair and lasting resolution of the legacy of residential schools.

The Common Experience Payment wrapped up last year and it's believed nearly 100-percent of living students applied. That deal saw survivors receive $10,000 for the first school year and $3,000 for every additional year.

NAN Deputy Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler is encouraging people to get in their applications, but acknowledges the IAP is a more in-depth process.
Fiddler says if you miss the deadline it will be very difficult to get an extension.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which is part of the process, will be returning to the City in the coming weeks.
