Smash-and-grabs

Several local restaurant owners are cleaning up Thursday morning after a series of late-night smash-and-grabs.

The owners of Cousin’s Restaurant on Dawson Road arrived at the establishment at about 6 a.m., only to find their front doors smashed in and the cash register destroyed on the floor.

They weren't alone.

Police also responded to similar break-ins at A.J.'s Trading Post on Highway 61 and the Pita Pit on Red River Road. In both cases the front doors were smashed and the cash registers taken.

Thunder Bay Police are continuing their investigation.

Nope. My business has had several attempts at being broken in to. Cue balls thrown through the window, rocks, crowbars at the back door. Not much you can do except put in cameras and a security system. It won't stop the attempts, but does deter them.

Catching them or not catching them is sort of pointless.
All it will do is put someone who felt they had no other option other than this in jail, or not.

What is the issue here is why are so many in this community so desperate for money that they end up doing type of thing?

Perhaps we could attempt to solve that problem (might I suggest drug abuse?) rather than feeling its solved because our expensive police force catches them? Actually catching them does almost no good at all, as they will just be institutionalized in our jail system, likely for most of the rest of their life.

Dealing with the issues is cheaper than police/court/jail. Those three are proven time and time again not to work.

If the police catch them I would suggest they were successful. If the courts sentence them to jail then I also suggest that the court system also worked. If the jail houses them from the start to the finish of their sentence then they too were successful.
AND I would also suggest that the victims of these offences would be satisfied and happy with the results.
I would suggest that they would not be happy to be told that if only these poor poor (insert loser excuse here) could have had a program in place to prevent them from turning into losers in the first place the system isn't going to do anything for you.
What a slap in the face to the vast majority of citizens who do not break the law and pay taxes. Let them be institutionalized...you make your bed you lay in it.
"For most of the rest of their life"? What country are you talking about?

While I agree with you that we need to focus more resources on drug addiction, addictions in general and helping kids to avoid a life of crime saying that the police/justice system is useless is a simply wrong.

A majority of crimes are committed by relatives and then friends. Which means that there will always need to be police and a justice system because humans are imperfect creatures.

Our jail systems could be a good place to rehabilitate people and give them the proper work training they need to contribute to society when they leave.

Remember that 50 people cause 60-70% of the drunk calls that Thunder Bay police get and most of the time they aren't going to change the way they live because addiction is so ingrained in them.

Our police forces are more expensive now because of downgrading services by the government. Getting rid of the social workers and addictions programs means the police have to do that job even if they like it or not.

Catching them is not pointless. What must be done is, after being caught, tried and found guilty (no tax payer paid lawyers; they must defend themselves), the judge or JP fines them a set amount. Once that is done, the judge or JP must then spin a wheel marked 50X, 100X, etc., up to 1-million times (for people like Conrad Black). These will be the multipliers of the set fine. The thief then either pays it in fill, or pays it off on the chain gang. Chain gangs have never hurt anyone. Chain gangers, our thieves, will not succumb to heart attacks if seen by their friends shoveling snow for seniors, bagging dog poop in city parks, or crunching goose droppings at Chippewa Park. We are too soft on these guys. Moreover, judges and lawyers make too much money to change the system; there are too many well-fed status quo agents to change anything, and the system is designed intentionally to help or change no one. It's an industry, and a good one. Five will get you ten these guys don't do time.

SERIOUSELY????? How much cash did they get twen dollars??? As far as I know most people empty their tills at the end of the night, for the amount in damages they will have to pay, I hope these idiots are caught soon, and responible for paying for all their stupid acts of damages. So sad for the businesses, all really great places sorry to hear

I guess they're trying to pay for gas for the new car they just got, since these three locations are all about as far apart as you can get without leaving city limits..

I would love them to get caught but then what, they will be charged and likely be released back on the street to continue what they started. Sad but true.
