Needed change

By Jodi Lundmark, tbnewswatch.com
Rebate, Rebate, RebateRebates for just about everyone. $500 Graduate Rebate; $500 Loyalty Rebate; $500 Rebate for Active Military Personnel.www.thunderbaymitsubishi.ca

Bruce Hyer and John Rafferty are in agreement.

Pension reform for Canadian MPs is necessary.

“MP pensions are unfair,” said Hyer (Ind., Thunder Bay-Superior North).
“I think Canadian MPs should get exactly the same pension treatment as average Canadians. We need a (Canada Pension Plan) system that is adequate to live on and suits the needs of all Canadians,” Hyer added.

Taxpayers have been contributing $24 into the program for every $1 an MP puts in. Conservatives are planning to change that to an even 50/50 split when they introduce their next budget bill.

Hyer said the process should be done in the House of Commons and be an open process.

“It should involve public opinion,” he said.

Rafferty (NDP, Thunder Bay-Rainy River) said he thinks the pension reform should be looked at by an arms-length independent body and doesn’t think the federal government should be deciding how the reform happens.

While Rafferty says the changes are needed, he think it should be a separate piece of legislation and not part of the upcoming omnibus budget bill the Conservative government is planning to release.

“I think Canadians want to see how their MP votes on pensions and pension reform. If it’s in the omnibus bill, I can tell you there’s bound to be things in that bill I’m certainly not going to support,” he said.

Mr. Hyer. You quiting the NDP and collecting your $150 K yearly as an indepenent without a bi election is the definition of "unfair". Not one vote was cast for you in your current role! Not one.

Your statement is not necessarily true. I for one cast my vote for the individual, not their so called party alliance. Therefore as far as I'm concerned, my vote for Mr Hyer would still be valid for is past and 'current' role.

my opinion is the same, MP pension reform is needed and long overdue, but Hyer's trip to Guatemala's controversial mine site on the company's dime is just plain wrong....no matter how Brucie spins this, he will never have my support and respect again, he is a self-serving weasel

Would Hyer and Rafferty be the first two to volunteer for these pay cuts?

Rafferty doesn't want it decided in the House of Commons? Is he afraid of his pension not being as high as he thought going in? Give me a break. Glad the Conservatives can push this through without opposition.

I agree with the fact that this should be a separate bill - even though I know why omnibus bills are being used at both the federal and provincial levels ( ie to speed up the process that is slowed by partisan politics complete with slow votes and excessive amendments and committees). But this subject is plain and simple and should be separated out just for the public view. While these are our elected representatives - I also believe that they are kind of in the middle of a conflict of interest - are they not??? I am also not in favor of some independent body doing a review as that never seems to be independent and depends upon the instructions that are given this body. MPP's pensions should be viewed in the most simplistic manner. That means if you work less than 8 years you get your contributions to invest in whatever pension plan you like. If you go past 8 years - you get your plus the people (govt) share. In all cases you should never contribute less than what the govt puts in.

Did anyone actually look into the whole interview with either MP? Both believe that the MPs should be getting the same CPP that every other Canadian would get. They believe the efforts should be on CPP reform so that all Canadians have access to a pension they can live on, and the MPs should be happy to take that same pension. They are both opposed to this being part of the omnibus bill because while they support the pension reform they do not support other parts of the bill.

It's all lip service anyways. They can whine all they want and talk the talk but the fact is they have ZERO chance of forming the next government to enact any changes AND if by some miracle they ever did, then pension reform would be put on the back burner faster than a fat kid eating a red smarty! It's all BS for the camera!

@waterunderthebridge - I just want to clarify one thing in your post. Although I appreciate the fact that it was likely just a typo on your part and that you likely meant to type "MP" rather than "MPP," but just so we are clear the following statement you wrote is incorrect.

"MPP's pensions should be viewed in the most simplistic manner. That means if you work less than 8 years you get your contributions to invest in whatever pension plan you like. If you go past 8 years - you get your plus the people (govt) share. In all cases you should never contribute less than what the govt puts in."

Just so we are clear here - MPPs (Ontario elected officals)do not recieve a pension at all. This article is about MPs (Canadain elected officals)

The majority of people thing Mauro, Gravelle, Campbell etc get pensions - however they do not. MPs like Hyer and Rafferty do.

You are correct - it was one xtra P - you are also correct that Mike Harris - got rid of the provincial gold and wound it down and replaced it with an RRSP system (but dont believe the hype that they dont get pension money - just not a pension in that strict definition) One other note on MP's pensions - """"" the C.D. Howe Institute, which has done some in depth and interesting work looking at pensions Canadians hold, released their own report into MP pensions. Their research indicates MP pensions entitlements are underfunded by $1 billion.""""

waterunderthebridge says:
One other comment about MPP's retirement dollars - they get 5% of their MPPs salary towards this plus whatever the law allows them to match - PLUS - thanks to McGuinty - """" the Liberal government did increase MPP severance to the current six months for up to four years of service, 12 months for up to eight years and 18 months for more than eight years. """ So they get a big cash payout when they get kicked out of office or decide not to run again. Thanks again to the taxpayer. But at least it is funded now.
