Foulds convinces council to look at Municipal closure decision

Municipal Golf Course may have found its saviour.

Current River Coun. Andrew Foulds has got council’s approval to consider amending an earlier bylaw instructing city officials to divest itself of the 88-year-old course at the end of the 2012 season.

Foulds, one of three councillors to approve the original vote, is asking council to consider postponing by a year the decision to close the course, saying the extra time will give supporters time to come up with a plan to save the nine-hole track.

“In essence we’ve got to change three votes,” said Foulds, who also has the support of Coun. Paul Pugh, absent from the original vote.

Foulds only needs a bare minimum majority to temporarily reverse the decision.

“A lot has happened in the last number of months when it comes to information provided to council. First of all there’s been this community petition with thousands of signatures. We’ve had a closed-session report which certainly articulates the complexity of the issue,” he said.

“In essence my amendment tonight, if supported by council, would give Municipal Golf Course a lifeline. It would stay open for another year and in the meantime there would be another ad hoc committee struck with members of council and the committee to look at Municipal and golf operations and make recommendations on, and really deciding how valuable this municipal asset and public service is.”

When making its original decision, council was acting on a report that suggested declining golf numbers across North America, numbers that stand up in Thunder Bay, mean there are too many courses in the city for golfers to reasonably support.

The same report says the city could save at least $100,000 a year, though on Sunday Coun. Aldo Ruberto, who said he won’t change his vote, suggested the number is significantly higher.

The debate is scheduled to return to council on Oct. 15.

Foulds said he’s not sure if he’s got the votes needed to sway council’s decision, but he wouldn’t feel right if he didn’t try.
“I think that all our facilities are valuable to our citizens, whether you golf or not. Not all of us as citizens use all of our services. But I do know (Municipal) is of benefit to seniors and particularly to young golfers. To me that’s worth the investment.”

Typical city councillors, flip flop, we have wasted enough time with this, a decision has already been made. The more time they spend on this the more it cost's the taxpayer's more money. The city and all levels of government need to get out of the sports and entertainment business and get back to basic's like road's, water and sewer, etc. and let private business be in the sports and entertainment business.

Man oh Man....this is the final proof which indicates how wishy-washy our city council really is...there is so much flip flopping going on here it is enough to make one dizzy.!

Council flip flopping on these community issues goes to show just how out of touch council is with the community. They rely to much on administrative reports. Whether they are factual or not. Council, wake up and get with the community.

When is council up for re-election? We need new blood in there. My recommendation, get rid of the ward system so areas stop competing with each other and look at making Thunder Bay as a city great. 2nd drop the number of councillors and make them full-time positions so we get these jokers out of here and get serious candidates.

City Council can't win. When they make a decision they are condemned for that, when they want to get all the facts they are condemned for that. I know many people that use Municipal Golf Course. Maybe the city should shut down some of the hockey rinks that cost so much money to support. I believe they cost us much more than Municipal Golf Course does each year.

Changing one's opinion in light of new evidence is the mark of a great leader. Holding on to old, stale ideas despite new evidence is the mark of an ideologue. I'd much rather have a Council that was responsive to the clearly articulated needs of its citizens than one that serves only a narrow yet vocal opposition (to pretty much anything new). Nice work, Andrew Foulds! Let's get more initiatives underway to keep our city moving!

Not always necessarily true. In a last ditch effort to help their cause the "new evidence" is often just a grasp at straws. It takes a good leader to see this and either stick to or change their opinion. It could be that Foulds is easily led astray.

Flip flop, hip, hop, our city council once again shows its true colors.
Make up your mind and stick with it.
As others pointed out, golf courses should be a private business sect not under the city umbrella of expenses.
If a group of people are so hell bent on keeping this place open, have them fund it in order to keep it running.
I don't golf at all, so I am sure many will agree why should my tax dollars be going into this money pit?

Municipal isn't even in the city limits. Sell it and let the township of Oliver collect the tax revenue.

Hooray for city council on this as well as the conservatory decision. Perhaps the group that wants to keep Municipal open will form a volunteer group to run it. I would be willing to put in some time there. BUT will city council and the city union workers allow it?? It is a great place for older golfers and younger golfers.
