From nude bathing to one-animal zoo, Boulevard Lake has its share of stories

People used to bathe nude in Boulevard Lake.

A religious sect called the Doukhobors would use the lake and draw the attention of giggling local teens who would spy on them from the woods.

“It’s speculated that that’s one of the reasons why a lot of the trees were cut down around Boulevard Lake, to stop the teenagers and stop the bathing,” city archivist Matt Szybalski said.

The parks also had a zoo with a moose as its only animal. It was set free around 1914. These are just a couple of stories dug up from the city’s past in a new online historical parks exhibit. It highlights the history of six local parks.

“We have a real wealth of documents and records in the archives on those parks,” Szybalski said. “Everything from bylaws and correspondence to engineering drawings.”

“The hope is that people will want to come here and research their neighbourhood park.”

It also highlights the history of parks administration. When the provincial parks act was passed in 1883, Port Arthur was the first municipality to have a parks board. Also discovered was correspondence from Rudyard Kipling who visited the area.

Along with commenting on the parks, he discussed the rivalry between the two towns and even wrote how difficult it would be for the towns to come up with a name should amalgamation ever happen.

“He basically says that they existed to bash one another and that if one had died the other would have died because they would have had nothing to do,” he said.

The exhibit is available to the public at the city archives Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

From what I have observed, neither side has died and the bashing continues to this day. It's funny the same thoughts from so long ago still exist to this day.

So Rudyard Kipling even noticed the rivalry way back in 1883? And it continues to this day....that's why Thunder Bay can't get its act together, it is still Port Arthur vs Fort William.

Kind of sounds like the bashing that occurs on the TB Newswatch forum. I haven't read to many constructive comments over the years. Basically this is a forum for the complainers and naysayers.

Did you really just leave a comment full of complaints about people who complain, on a public interest story that isn't relevant in the least?

No Sui, he/she simply left their opinion about a quote from Rudyard Kipling that was written in the article. I didn't read any complaints at all. He/she then gave their observations about the comment section. All completely relevant. Yes, it's subjective, but that's what most of these comments are.

And I'm assuming you meant that the comment wasn't relevant, not that the public interest story isn't relevant...if we're going to jump on and criticize people's comments, you know...

Chillax a little...

It's a beautiful park and we current rivertons would like to keep it that way.
PLEASE pick up your garbage and doggie mess when using it.
I'm talking to you, teenagers and our beloved west fort/F.W. visiters(Whom are just jealous) I'm sure

Personally I'd rather be boating and catching 10 lb. Walleyes in the Kam with Mount McKay as a backdrop than to covet your man made, goose crap ridden cesspool that you so admire. But that's just me.

Please. You are giving too much credit to Fort William residents. We are much to lazy to be bothered to drive all the way to Boulevard...

Well these days bathing either in the nude...or swimming in Boulevard lake...which is very close to a cesspool most summers...is an option the good old Doukhobors would most likely pass on now.

Alas, future generations will read, "after years of neglect from the city and from the accumulation of goose poo in the late 90's, the do not swim signs posted from the local health unit were a regular site in the hot summer days"

The first sentence of this tells us why the lake is now too polluted to swim in. Dirty buggers.

I'll have you know that I still do many nude activities at Boulevard Lake. And I, sir, am no Doukhobour.

The rivalry and and bashing between PA and FW residents is still alive and well to this day. Though with the $50+ million dollar waterfront development and soon to be event centre in Port Arthur downtown core, I think it is safe to say where the future of Thunder Bay is being invested.

Were the Doukhobors present in the Port Arthur / Current River? My impression was that their only presence in any number was when a group overwintered in Fort William in 1907-1908. Their nude parade on New Year's Day of 1908 made an impression on the town; I consider skinny dippers being described as "like Doukhobors" to be more probable than any actual Doukhobors swimming there.

To eliminate the rivalry we need to disolve any differentiating or divisive policies that exist in the city.

Separate city north/south divisions for public works with separate budgets and supervisors need to be amalgamated into a central yard with all sanitation facilities..... AT THE DUMP!

We also do not have an express route to cross town. Fort William road needs to become an expressway from the harbour (not so)expressway to river street to allow for faster cross town traffic.
Stop the "build things in central areas so the hole city can bennefit" BS and cetralize at zone appropriate location. Build the rest of the areas according to the plan, multiplex near marina park, new JAIL near the new courthouse. Medical and research should be near the hospital. This is not hard.

Not being born before the days of PA and FW I can say that I think of this as one city with two city minded people running it. FYI I live in FW and use Centenial and Boulivard all the time. GET OVER IT!

The days of Port Arthur and Fort William began in the 1880s. If you were born before that you're the oldest person in the world. Congratulations!
