Health care professionals from all over the world are in town this week for a major medical conference.

Rendez-Vous 2012 has drawn more than 850 people from almost 50 countries combining five world medical conferences into one right here in Thunder Bay.

“The overarching conference theme is community participation,” Northern Ontario School of Medicine dean Roger Strasser said. “It’s about community members being actively involved in research in the education of future health professionals.”

Being triple the size of any one medical conference, Rendez-Vous 2012 will host around 400 workshops from Tuesday until Sunday when it wraps up. Along with the economic benefit of having so many visitors to the city, Strasser said conference members will visit 30 community health care sites on the weekend. The information exchanged between everyone will benefit communities all over the world.

“We’ll be sharing our experiences and we’ll be learning from the visitors who share their experiences,” he said.

More than 300 medical students will also benefit from the conference by networking with educators, researchers and other students.

“I expect that they will learn from the questions that are asked of them from their experience as medical students here in northwestern Ontario,” Strasser said.

Over the past two years, conference officials have been preparing for the event. Strasser said getting the five partners together took a lot of work.

“It’s been many years in preparation for this conference.”

Ummmmmmmmm....I really have to burst Roger Strasser's balloon...the largest medical education conference in Canada which included Five of Canada’s premier healthcare organizations: The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada, the Canadian Association for Medical Education, The College of Family Physicians of Canada, the Medical Council of Canada and The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, are proud to host the 2012 Canadian Conference on Medical Education (CCME 2012) was held in Banff, Alberta, April 14-18, 2012.

His term "overarching"...which means dominating or embracing all else...is a real stretch of the truth.!

You cannot make a positive comment about anything, can you?
Nowhere in the article does it quote Mr. Strasser as saying this is the ‘largest medical education conference’ in Canada, so you are off base with that rant.
As for the definition of “overarching”; another definition words it as “Extending over or throughout”, which fits quite well with the theme of this conference.

Ignore him. He is the type of person that sees only what he wants to see. 1 word sets him off. He had to google for the "largest" med conference because he needed something to slam Thunder Bay.

Surprised a negative Hobbes comment was missing from his post.

Just ignore him, everybody else does.
Now when the proposed arena/multiplex is built along with the three new hotels, events like this will be held more often in more practical settings. Good job.

There's no doubt in my mind, that in a few years Thunder Bay may be hosting the largest medical conference in Canada. Unfortunately we just don't have the capacity to host such an event presently.
In fact,it's my understanding that many of the visitors that came to Thunder Bay for this event were actually put up in private homes due to the limitations.
So for the folks that can't understand the need for 3 new hotels ~ there's your answer.
