Michael Gravelle says Dalton McGuinty may very well be the best premier Ontario has ever had.

The Minister of Natural Resources on Monday said he’s still in shock at the news McGuinty is leaving provincial politics after 16 years at the helm of the Ontario Liberals, the past nine as premier. McGuinty has not yet given a reason for his departure, though he has taken heat in recent weeks about the cancellation of a southern Ontario gas plant.

McGuinty told his caucus Monday evening that he was stepping down, though will stay on as premier through the upcoming leadership convention where his replacement will be chosen.

Gravelle, the Thunder Bay-Superior North MPP, said McGuinty has been a friend to both him and the North since he took over the leadership of the party in 1996, one year after Gravelle was first elected to Queen’s Park.

“He’s certainly shown a great amount of confidence in me and I’m grateful for that,” said Gravelle, reached by phone in Toronto where he and his staff are letting the news sink in.

“I think all Northerners should be very grateful for the extraordinary levels of support he’s shown for the North over many years. I’m sorry to see he’s made this decision. I think he’s been a tremendous premier. He’s a man of tremendous integrity, of great vision for the province, great vision for the North and a thoroughly decent man who I really believe is perhaps the greatest premier we’ve ever had in the province of Ontario.”

Gravelle’s Thunder Bay-Atikokan counterpart Bill Mauro said the news came as a surprise to him, even though the whispers have been echoing in Queen’s Park for some time that McGuinty might be ready to step aside.

“I knew it was a possibility, but nevertheless he has made the decision,” Mauro said. “He’s been leader for 16 years and premier for nine of those years. That’s a long haul and I certainly respect his decision.”

Faced with a minority in the provincial legislature, Mauro said obviously McGuinty thinks the time is ripe for change.

“He clearly thinks it is. If you’re around long enough you know there’s a bit of an ebb-and-flow and a natural life to parties and to governments and clearly there’s a time for renewal, where you have to sort of recharge and re-energize,” Mauro said.

“I think he feels very strongly that now is the proper time for him to step aside, to allow for a leadership convention and for someone else to take the helm.”

Gravelle, a two-term cabinet minister, said the North can thank McGuinty for economic renewal that’s really starting to come into fruition now, noting the premier helped support plans to reduce energy costs in the forest industry and supportive of the mining sector in making the Ring of Fire a priority for the province.

“He’s shown a real economic vision for Northern Ontario,” Gravelle said, adding McGuinty was supportive of the expansion and twinning of Northern highways during his term as premier.

“This is a man who I think will go down in history as someone who truly turned this province around. Before he became premier I think we were in a very difficult situation and now we are in a position where the province is moving forward in an incredibly prominent way, as are all of us in Northern Ontario.”

Both Mauro and Gravelle plan to take a wait-and-see approach as the leadership race begins in earnest, though neither politician indicated whether they plan to seek the premier’s chair and take a run at the leadership.

Tonight is a night for reflection, Gravelle said. The future of the party can wait a day or two.

“I’m just giving no thought to that,” said Gravelle, asked about his own leadership aspirations. "Quite literally the premier told us of his decision about two hours ago and we are all very much focused on that.”

The best Premier Ontario has ever had?? You gotta be kidding me! All the secrets will soon be revealed I am sure, you don't just resign after just being re-elected for no reason, but McGuinty has never been know to tell the truth at anytime!..Thanks for wasting more of our hard earned money when you called the last election (not long ago), and now you skate, leaving a real mess for someone else to clean up as usual! Good Riddens to bad rubbish!

I am forced to agree with the postings above about the Premier. All he has done is provide record investment in the north for highways, capital buildings, health care and education.
Billions. He has only delivered billions to a region that used to survive on pennies. He has only made the growth of this region possible when many other regions that used to depend on forestry are still struggling. I know every forestry job lost was his fault (sarcasm) but why no credit for the thousands created. I speak of the 1000 just at Bombardier.

We all have warts. Criticize if you must but when you get beyond the usual bombastic postings of irrelevancy, compare the record.

Compare this governments record for the north and specifically these two ridings against any past government for the last 50 years.
Show me who was better and back it up. But no one will because no one can. Anyhow, I agree it is time to retire, but it is not time for a new gov't. Today I don't see a better alternative

Can these two be next to resign? Listening to Gravelle regurgitate whatever McGuilty feeds him is annoying to say the least.

'I think all Northerners should be very grateful for the extraordinary levels of support he’s shown for the North over many years." WHAT? Have to laugh out loud at that one. What has McGuilty EVER done for NORTHERN Ontario?

Thanks to him we are left with a pile of debt, an extensive list of scandals, and a province where innocent family pets are seized and killed; good riddance.

As is normal on this site, another posting that is simply wrong. MPP's do not receive a pension, MP's do after I believe 6 years in office. I'm sure we won't here nvjgu reply to this but hopefully other users on this site will remember this and take it into account when reading anything he has to say. People on this site always have opinion which most of the time are not based with any facts, this particular user comes to mind as well as jimmyboy, but I just call him the Gambler. I am truly thankful that there are people in our community like Mr. Mauro and Mr. Gravelle who have the guts to actually present an opinion and not simply hide behind a keyboard.
As far as nvjgu's comment about it being time for renwel which I'm going to assume is renewal, I challenge you or anyone else to find two MPP's who have brought more investment to our city, or better yet, just compare their record against their to federal counterparts Rafferty and Hyer.
10/16/2012 10:28:12 AM
Tim H. says:
Hyer and Rafferty are equally useless for Thunder Bay.

but the scary part is people like you believe the measure of good government is how much money they spend to keep you happy. Thats an indication of a terrible government. Government is supposed to manage our province, not bankrupt it by putting us into hundreds of billions of debt buying votes from people with your apparent low standards.

These politicians have a duty to act responsibly regarding what's best for the province of Ontario, not what's best for special interest groups who hold out their hands.

Just watch, as the dirt comes out on McGuinty our local bootlickers will be regretting their poor choice of words, pretending it didnt happen.

jd says:
You are correct they don't receive pensions after they leave office, they get a compensation package instead.
Compensation packages begin at one-half of an MPP's annual salary. Those who serve more than eight years, are given a payment equal to one-and-a-half times their annual salary when they leave. In addition, MPPs receive a percentage of their salary each year that goes into a locked-in retirement account (LIRA) that they can match and direct where they see fit. Currently, the amount is 10% of an MPP's salary
Not to shabby, I loose my job and I more money. So Dalton freezes wages but will get a 50% raise when he looses in the next election.

leadership races take time so how long will this one take. Maybe they will all have a very long Christmas break so where does this leave Ontario?
He never did anything for Ontario and now he is saying screw Ontario I want out. Stick around Dolton and fix the mess you made or better yet, call an election and as usual leave someone else to clean up your mess.

for examples of this irrelevancy, please see the next three postings after mine.

So again, please tell me who was better for the north in the last 50 years.

I will give a list to choose from

Mike Harris --- Conservative
Bob Rae---- NDP
David Peterson---Liberal
Bill Davis--- Conservative

There are the four most recent choices or you can disregard those and select one of your own. The represent all parties. So tell us all, who has been better for this region.

I will wait as I have been for about 4 years for someone to tell me who the better Premier for Northern Ontario has been.
10/16/2012 7:14:21 AM
TBDR says:
Well in fairness under Harris, we led the country in every single economic indicator... now we trail in most. Under Bob Rae the economy sucked... but it sucked in every province. Under Davis and Peterson, things were pretty much fine... we were a thriving province.

jimmyboy you really need to get over whatever personal issue you have with Mauro. Maybe you should throw your hat in the ring in the next provincial election and run against him. It would be one heck of a gamble jimmy but why not go for it, that is unless you just prefer to sit back and complain about pretty much every piece of news in this city. Something tells me you'll choose the latter.

Gravelle thinks he was so great imagine where we would be if we hadn't had Ehealth, the Ornge fiasco, gun registry, no gun registry, Bearwise, no Bearwise - billions of dollars spent on absolutely nothing. Regardless of what he gave us in the north (a partial 4 lane hwy that was long overdue), we will be paying for his decisions for years to come.

I see micky's and billy's lips moving but I hear daltons voice speaking.

Look, these two bootlicking MPPs would be better off distancing themselves from Dalton rihgt now. I believe that there is far more to follow on Daltons resignation. I think that as the rats are jumping from a sinking ship, the truth may come to light. What a shameful performance.

The Premiere tried to hang bentley out to dry over the gas plant mess. I think that billions have been spent trying to hide the acquistion of several liberal seats in the GTA.

The Kitchener/Waterloo election scheme failed miserably when the teachers got involved.

The continuous scandals with Ornge, lottoscams, gas fired flipflops, ehealth, lying, etc, have finally caught up with this failure of a premier.

What else would you expect from our two followers. When you have no backbone, no integrity, no where else to turn.

Lets hope that they go down with the sinking ship. Sad thing is they will never be held accountable.

How about more local level events.

Tax forgiveness of $26 million plus $25 million in loan guarantees to purchase Terrice Bay pulp - now sold.

Global stickes - consumed millions - can't be sold - because it's worthless.

Generating stations retrofits - for power that isn't needed since so much manifacturing in the area is now dead. Instead of cleaning coal burners. They are negotiating price breaks now - read that as government sponsored price gouging.

Green energy act laws which forced people to swallow wind turnbines into their neighbourhoods. Followed by lawsuits to threaten people into acceptance. And paying green energy generators very generous rates.

A courthouse with no parking planned. Demolishing a functioning bus terminal.

A $13 million social serives building with old aged homes being closed. With the care of sensiors being loaded into for profit corporations.

Lighting on the expressway. While the sewage treatment plant fails.

etc etc ... it is a long list.

tbayguy009 says:
May I also add.

The HST to tax more things then ever before. ie. electricity (all the while promissing thousands of jobs pushing it - well where are they?) - abandoned by BC right 'smartly'

Oh, and the billion dollar cost of those time of use 'smart' energy meters. To charge you various rates on your electricity so there is no way you can ever understand the bill. Using borrowed money for meters that could have been used to create more electrical generation capacity.

Oh right, generation capacity. Isn't that the story that they want to totally hide from now.

Did this parties health care tax actually fund E-health and ORNG ... Think about it. Out of every families budget and into friendly corporate coffers.

Don't worry though the legacy will be around for everyone to remember. A legacy of the doubling of the provincial debt.

Even the national news showed 198,000 lost manufacturing jobs after this 'tool' took office AND before the ression of 08.
10/16/2012 11:50:51 PM
yqtyqt says:
Actually, McGuinty more than tripled the accumulated debt. In doing so, he's crippled the economy for many, many years.

If you have a family of 4, you pay more to service his debt alone, than you pay for the average municipal tax bill including education. One year's interest charges alone on daltons credit card collected in thunder bay would build a 6000 seat multiplex each year. The interest alone that we pay in one year on his spending addiction would pay for major upgrades to the sewage plant so that council doesn't have to be out there begging for donations. One years interest would pay for several homes for the aged. Etc, etc. It's criminal what he has done to ontarians. And I think the worst news out of queens park is yet to arrive. He is too arrogant to quit unless he knows something that the rest of us don't. And by that, I don't even think his 2 bootlooking yes-men here know what he's left behind.

Stay tuned, this isn't over yet.

no one will answer the question as to who has been better for the north in the last 50 years, I will ask another.
What is the job of our MPP.
Is he to fight for balanced budgets.
Is he to say no to funding.
Should they have said no to the law school
No to 1.5 billion for Bombardier and 1000 jobs
should they have said no to hundreds of new medical jobs
Should they say no to new health procedures that are saving lives and creating jobs
Should they have said no to the hundreds of millions for highway work, no to the courthouse, the margaret smith centre and other buildings that meant hundreds upon hundreds of jobs.
I get the debt. I don't like debt, but what were our two MPP's supposed to do.
Say we won't fight for it, we want it to go somewhere else or not at all. This city would be 80,000 people if they did that. Instead it has a future and housing prices prove what is going on here. so critics, we have seen nothing from Ottawa. Is that what you wanted from Toronto too?
