An employee at Quality Market says he’s sad to hear the stores are closing because his coworkers were like a family to him.

The owners of Quality Market announced that both stores would be closing soon. About 80 employees will affected by the closure. The announcement of the shutdown was made on Tuesday in a release sent to local media, but cited no reason for the closure.

The two stores, a newly constructed location on Golf Links Road, the other Centennial Square, remain open for the time being.

Noel Towegejick worked at the Centennial Square location for the past year. The 19-year-old said he was sad to hear it was closing.

“A lot of people are going to lose out on their jobs but what can you do,” Towegejick said. “Have to go find a new job I guess. I’ve known people who have worked here for a long time. They put their lives into this job. I don’t know that they’re going to do. Everyone is close with each other. I guess we are a family I guess. It was a good place to work. The boss was a good guy.”

But the staff weren’t the only ones taken by surprise.

Some customers who spoke with Tbnewswatch.com said they were surprised to hear the news.

Margo Faykes often shopped at the Golf Links Road store because it was close to home. She said it will not be more inconvenient to shop at one of the other grocery stores.

“I’m shocked,” Faykes said. “I liked the store it was locally owned.”

Shane Wilson agreed with Faykes saying the closing of the store just makes getting groceries a little harder.  He said it was a surprise to him because the store had recently opened.

He called the closing a shame.

Anne Breukelman went to the Quality Market at the Centennial Square because she said she didn’t like going into the larger stores because it’s important to support locally owned businesses.

“It makes me very sad because I liked shopping here,” Breukelman said. "The closure affects a lot of other businesses. I don’t like the big, big stores coming in and taking all the business away from the small businesses.”

Kevin Thompson said it will be an inconvenience to have the Centennial Square store close as he lives close by and his wife works at Victoriaville Mall.

He said it is never good when a locally owned business shuts down.

Colby Flank, a United Food and Commercial Workers Union official, said the abrupt decision, made by the locally owned stores owners, caught everyone off guard.

"My understanding from one of my members is there was a meeting last night, but the closure was announced to them today," Flank said, noting employees were in the midst of contract negotiations and had met with management as recently as Oct. 5. "I don't think they've even had any time to digest things."

The company, in operation for 24 years, also operated a third store in County Fair, but closed it when they opened their Golf Links Road site.

The owners said in the release that effective immediately, all stock will be sold at significant savings.

"After 24 years of serving the community, Quality Market is announcing that it will be closing both locations soon. The Quality Market family would like to thank the residents of Thunder Bay for supporting our family business," brothers Dan and David Stezenko said in a release issued to media on Tuesday.

Tbnewswatch.com attempted to contact both owners but they refused to comment.

You clearly don't understand business. But you do clearly understand how to perpetuate conjecture.

Ive seen how owners, management and staff interact at quality market and I'm sure it was, as the metaphore implies "a family". However, this does not obligate the owners to share business information with their staff.

You don't go broke overnight - in your simplistic assessment, that might seem true, but you see only the result in this story. You have no clue how long these guys may have been fighting and maneuvering to save their business.

I am totaly shocked!! I am a regular customer at the Oliver Road location. First off the staff is second to none here in Thunder Bay. They are friendly, curteous and ALWAYS helpful.
I have never encountered any other store to have their quality of service. ( I also shopped at their County Fair Location and followed them to their new store ) I am very saddened by this news. I have to agree with the other comments that the buisness must have been sold to a larger company. If so I am so disappointed with the owners. Your staff has worked very hard to make your buisness a success and without their dedication you may not have had the customer following that you do. To not give them any warning as to your plans to sell may have been neccesary from a buisness point but from an emplyee's perspective a little notice would have been the decent thing to do. I will certainly miss the staff and the store,Thunder Bay has lost one of its jewels.

Let's not be too quick to speculate or start rumours. The owners of Quality Market have been good citizens and have run an upstanding business for 24 years. It has been a joy to shop there and Quality Market will be missed. Let's wait for the rest of the story.

Business is business. If they sold out to a larger corp they were only putting their own needs first. Isn't that why most people start their own business? Customer service and employee relations, that's all secondary. At one point in time supporting local business was the thing to do, but its a different world and times are tough for everyone. If identical products can be purchased cheaper at the bigger stores it's going to be a tough run for any small business. Employees of any local business should never get too comfortable, not nowadays.

To localdog, what an attitude, give away local jobs because of a few dollars. I would think that supporting the local companies would make more sense.Too many people are giving money to a box store that does not care about their employees or the community. And remember, employees in big non local companies better not get comfortable, we see what happens to them also.

Sui Generis says:
"I would think that supporting the local companies would make more sense"

No. Existing makes more sense. When the majority of people are on an incredibly tight budget, every dollar counts. Shopping at those box stores saves these families money that can then go to other much needed areas, like bills. The same item Quality Market carries can be found in 2 other main grocery stores for several dollars less. The simple fact is that if they can't remain competitive, then they generally can't afford to stay open. My sympathy to the employees, but, as callous as it sounds, business IS business.
10/17/2012 9:02:02 AM
localdog says:
Since when is reality "attitude"? You're free to support local companies all you like. I do, if they're providing a product that I can't get at another other store for half the price. If a local computer store is selling a laptop for $600 but the bigger store across the street has it for $600, I'm not about to swallow $200 just to make the locals happy. If you have disposable income by all means give it away however you see fit. Saving money makes me happy.

Don't forget those bigger stores that people are knocking provide a far greater number of employment opportunities. I don't know why everyone is pegging this store closure on Walmart, I would think Metro and Safeway were Quality Markets bigger competitors. I'm betting the owners were offered a sweet deal and decided it was time to retire, simple as that.

This is really sad. I love being able to walk to the store, buy groceries, walk home, forget something, walk back, and make my dinner.

I love that they support so many local charities and helped so many families over the years. They are a special store and there's no way WalMart will ever fill those shoes. Too bad so many people took these stores for granted. :(

I'd like to thank the family for creating a nice jewel of a store on Golf Links. The soup/salad bar and deli items were great. Basics like milk were always fair priced, veggies were fresh, service was absolute top-notch.

More than likely it became unprofitable for them to be able to survive. With food prices continuing to increase over the last few years, their inability to buy in massive bulk like Safeway or Metro, or Sobeys, has caused them to probably be losing money. Everything has increased in price drastically in the last 2-3 years, to the point where unless you rip your customers off, you are not making any money. It's a sad loss. Less competition means prices are just going to get higher.

I am so sorry such a wonderful establishment has to come to an end. And it truly saddens me to hear such negative comments in a time where there needs to be genuine empathy. None of us knows the full reasons or circumstances why this had to happen, so speculation and criticism is so unnecessary and wrong. It's sad...period. So why is it, that some people continually need to add that salt to the wounds of others during those times. Try a giving a hug...instead of being a thug. And for all the vultures out there intending on picking the store clean now that the prices have dropped...have the decency to leave that for the loyal costumers who insisted shopping local.
10/17/2012 7:50:01 AM
Me n My Opinion says:
Too late. The vultures were out in full force last night. I drove past the Centennial Square store and it saddened me. At least a hundred people in there - probably lots of first timers, and many probably being very demanding to the very 80 people who just found out they're unemployed.

I get that everyone works hard for their money and need to save a buck when they can, but knowing a number of the QM employees made it sad to watch. One man's loss is another man's gain I guess.

As far as what happened, who knows? The owners have been holding those cards pretty tight to their chests. Maybe it's a good news story. Maybe they've sold it. And if they did, hopefully they made job protection for their current staff a part of the deal. Who really knows? Not many people at this point. Let's just hope for the best for all involved - owners, managers, and front liners. Not to mention the many local businesses whose products they carried, and the
local charities they supported.
10/17/2012 8:45:03 AM
tomsawyer says:
HERE'S AN IDEA...For all those who are genuinely sorry this is happening...instead of getting that DISCOUNT on your groceries, why not donate "YOUR" savings to all those employees who will be affected by this. And if you've already gotten your discount...you'll know what to do.

People in this city are obsessed with shopping at WalMart (we have 3!!) yet they wonder why a locally owned and operated company has to shutter its doors? Business at Quality Market has been in free-fall since WalMart opened its Supercentre. When people stop being so focused on buying things as cheaply as possible, locally owned businesses will stand a chance.
10/17/2012 9:30:52 AM
yqtyqt says:
Yes you're right about people shopping at walmart.

For a union town, its very disappointing to hear that all of our well paid union people would prefer to be shopping at walmart than to give a local investor some business. I know that he can't compete with walmarts prices. But in the end, we'll all have mcjobs, or waljobs if we don't support local people.

When you hear govt employees, bombardier employees, teachers, university profs, mill workers, hydro employees explaining how they saved money at walmart, it makes you wonder how smart people can be so short-sighted.

I guess that its a self serving thing. But when it happens to them, they cry poverty or for govt assistance or go on strike.

No wonder no one wants to invest their own money here with a mentality like that.

10/17/2012 10:37:53 AM
OhBoy says:
Hmmm...perhaps you should ask that family member if they noticed the signs?

Maybe these guys had been trying for quite some time to make it work as I am sure they did not want to see the family business come to a close!

Did that employee notice the cut back in hours? The shelves a little more bare, perhaps the owners a bit more stressed? Pretty sure there was talk of cutting salaries of long time employees which was deemed totally unexceptable to these so called "self serving" owners.

Maybe just maybe these guys fought til the final hour to keep the business open and they just couldn't do it.

As for their "true colors", these horrible guys were know for contributions to local charities. "Locking the doors" - what should they do keep the doors open with no stock? Or should they have stocked the shelves then not paid for it?

But that's just my opinion...

Good posting and very valid points.

I guess future private investors (those who simply relay on government handouts), should take note of the thanks they get after using and risking their own money in business ventures locally. This business has provided many years of employment for people, paid their taxes, participated in charity events, sponsored individuals and teams, and been overall great corporate citizens.

I'm certain that this is not what Stezenko family had in mind and this must have been a tough decision for them after close to 25 years of commitment/service to Thunder Bay shoppers. Competition from multinational non union companies who pay mcwages to their employees must have put the squeeze on their ability to operate.

People - please get out and support our local business owners - even if it costs you a little bit more.

"There (also) seems to be a current trend in Canada and in the United States for smaller, neighbourhood stores and I think Loblaws is kind of stuck with a few too many superstores."

Lets not forget target is coming in next year and they're planning on selling frozen, dairy and dry grocery products supplied by Sobeys.

Hard to believe Loblaws is going to sit back and watch walmart and target take away customers from them. What better way to prepare for target and 2 walmarts which sells groceries and retain their customers by opening a smaller store (centennial square).
