THUNDER BAY -- With the weather turning colder, the clock on city roadwork is ticking.

Neebing Avenue, Market Street, Algoma Street and Miles Street are the last of the large projects still to be completed and Rick Harms, project engineer for the City of Thunder Bay said it will be a few weeks yet until they are completed.

“A couple of those projects were schedule for completion by the end of October, but along the way some extensions were requested,” he said.

Those roadwork projects should be completed within the first two weeks of November.

The Neebing Avenue work was supposed to be a three-week project, but Harms said they discovered the road also needed water main work done.

They couldn’t move forward with the project until they got the proper approvals from council.

Final grading and paving should be done before the end of the week. The paving of the shoulders of the road will be done next spring

Last month Mr. Rick Harms said that the contracts were getting larger, more complex and there was only a certain number of people to do the work.

Maybe its time to get the contractors together to talk about how the city can improve its contracts, how we can get contracts done sooner and provide the most economic benefit to the city as possible.

The city is only going to keep increasing the amount it spends on roads/ sewers etc and if the contractors can't keep up now then imagine when it comes 2014-2015. Hopefully these companies can pick up more workers for next season and get them trained to do the extra work. With the 16-24 unemployment rate at 15% and student debt going skyward I'm sure there is more then a few willing students who would work on the roads.

Oh yes once again proving that our city monicker "Superior by Nature"...is a far cry from reality.

Going back over the years....few if any type of city project..whether it be road construction or otherwise have rarely come in on time...not too mention the cost over-runs experienced...we are more than used to that being a yearly occurrence....just the way things are planned, managed and eventually completed.

10 years + and counting. We have a foot of water out front?? General Manager suggested a catchbasin North of Property on East side before property to catch the water & Engineer thinks another swell & grass (this was already attempted by GM). WOW! I thought the GM is the Superior not the engineer. Yet 5 catchbasins on opposite side of street. We agreed with General Manager suggestion à catchbasin! Funny work crew does not clean catchbasin in spring or deal with water back up to the property either. Extensive ongoing damage!
BUT we have $100 million for a complex and cannot fix a water problem at a corner for over 10 years`- amazing!

How many months does it take to finish Algoma Street?? I feel so bad for all the local businesses in that area. They should be working around the clock to get this area completed.

No big surprise here. They never seem to be able to keep to a schedule when it comes to roadwork or any other project for that matter.

Not only does it take forever to repair the roads, but we should be repairing more of them. I am a taxpayer!!!!!!

The Algoma Street businesses should get together and file a lawsuit against the city for loss of business.
Why not? Everyone else is suing the city for something or other.
I have been WWE champion for 341 days now, the 9th longest title reign in the titles history.

The best in the world.

Everyone involved in this project should be ashamed of themselves. This took twice as long as it should and there was NEVER a lane opened to get to the local businesses along that stretch as promised. Pathetic!
