THUNDER BAY -- Sometimes getting a job is as much about who you know as what you know.

Students at Lakehead University are being given the chance to connect with industry professionals this week at the school's annual Career and Job Expo.

Representatives from dozens of companies were at LU Tuesday and dozens more will visit Thursday to recruit students and upcoming graduates for a variety of employment opportunities.

Tuesday mainly featured mining and construction companies as well as government agencies. Thursday's career fair will focus more on business and health.

LU Career and Employment Specialist Christina Buzzi calls it a great way for students to explore their options, and get a foot in the door of potential employers.

Buzzi expects to see at least 1,500 students pass through the Agora to take advantage of the opportunity.

Forget private industry. No job security. No pensions. Poor wages and lousy locations. Be a civil servant. Everything, and more. Look what happened to the mills. Look what happened to the grain elevators.

Ummmm, the grain elevators are still running. Not as much as they once did but they're still going 5-7 days a week across the waterfront. They still have excellent wages ($28+ per hour)and benefits.

Don't aim for being a civil servant. There pay is not bad but the benefits are not very good. They have just had massive cuts too You can no longer go to the CRA offices on Syndicate and get in the door to pay your taxes or even pick up forms. And their wages have been mandated without going through the collective bargaining process. Things are not always as they appear to be.
