THUNDER BAY -- The community is losing one of its oldest jewelry stores.
The owners of Dave Douglas Jewellers cite retirement as the reason they’re closing their Alloy Drive location, after 43 years in business.
Dave Douglas said he purchased George H. Burke Jewellers, which opened in Port Arthur in 1936, in 1973. The original McCartney and Burke location began in Fort William in 1908.
He changed the name of the company in 1992.
“I am sorry to close, but the time is right for Rosalie and I to retire and spend time with our family. It has been a pleasure serving the Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario community and sharing in their special occasions and generally their happiest times,” Douglas said in a release.
A clearance sale is now on at the store.
“I have marked everything down to clear out and look forward to seeing our many friends and customers to say goodbye one last time.”
