Back to Work

By Leith Dunick, tbnewswatch.com

THUNDER BAY -- Sarah Campbell says Queen’s Park is not Premier Dalton McGuinty’s toy.

On a brisk Thursday afternoon in Thunder Bay, the Kenora-Rainy River MPP urged voters across the region to demand the premier end his prorogation of the Ontario legislature and allow the government to return to business.

Campbell launched Northwestern Ontario’s MPPs Back-to-Work campaign, with a small group of NDP supporters backing her, in front of the provincial government building in the downtown north core.

“There’s a lot of important work that needs to be done at Queen’s Park right now, and a lot of that work can only be done while Queen’s Park is sitting,” Campbell said. “There are a number of pieces of legislation that need to be proposed, they need to be amended. And there are a number of important projects that won’t go forward unless we do have that oversight.”

Liberal MPP Bill Mauro is on record stating the Oct. 15 shutdown of the legislature will only actually affect about four weeks of sitting time, taking into account the fact MPPs went back to work two weeks earlier to deal with an ongoing labour dispute with public school teachers.

Both he and fellow Thunder Bay MPP Michael Gravelle support the prorogation process, which could last until a new Liberal leader is chosen.

Campbell said Mauro is oversimplifying things a little.
“Along with prorogation, all of the bills that we had before the house, including many bills that the government deemed as necessary, urgent bills, they’ve all died,” she said.

“The clock has been reset. All of the months we’ve spent debating those bills, it’s all been wasted, and all the work that we’ve been doing on committees. So it’s a lot more than just four weeks.”

The legislature was working when McGuinty prorogued it, Campbell added, stating the premier, who announced he was leaving politics, only took that route to avoid dealing with a series of scandals that have since arisen.

“This is not a case of the legislature not working, as the Liberals claim. This is a case of a scandal-plagued government realizing that the opposition has been too effective in doing its job and instead of being held accountable they took the easy way out.”

Campbell is calling on residents of Thunder Bay to get involved and said there are a couple of ways to do it.

She’s inviting constituents to join the conversation on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter using the hashtag #MPPsBackToWork, or via the website  www.MPPsBackToWork.ca.

Opponents of prorogation can sign a petition or send a postcard to their local MPP.

I was just leaving the government building when her press conference was taking place...I waited around to speak with Sarah...she is a most impressive young lady to talk with...I like her gum-shin...and fully support her efforts to get back to work.!

So the best thing to do is to write letters/emails to McGuinty, Gravelle and Mauro...I told Sarah I was going to write mine this evening...and she asked me to copy her on the email...and I promised her I would do just that.!

All the LIBERAL Party is proving in my opinion is their "ARROGANCE OF POWER"...."CYNICAL SILENCING OF THE GOVERNMENT"...."SUBVERSION of the DEMOCRATIC rights of everyone who lives and works in ONTARIO".!

And for Bill Mauro to blow this all off with his summary of 4 weeks is all this will add up to...well Bill it is an UN-necessary 4 weeks worth of time lost...of course he supports the prorogation process....he is obviously litter trained.!

If the legislature is closed...why are the members being paid?

it is almost commical to watch the NDP say whatever they wish. The one time the NDP were in power, they stayed the full five years because they were afraid to go to the polls. No gov't had done that.

The leader of the NDP openly lied during the last leaders debate about the health care her son received at a Hamilton hospital. The next day, CBC was running with the story. People want to pretend it didn't happen.

Sarah wants people to believe that these "bills" have been lost. They weren't going to pass anyway. Private members bills rarely pass.

As for the comments by Mr. Mauro, I read them. While I didn't fully support the action, what he said made sense. Sarah doesn't even disagree, she just puts her NDP spin on it and gets away with it.

I would never vote NDP. We shall see where I fall when the next election comes

As for jimmyboy and his anti everything stance, please give us all a rest. I am sure our MPP's are shaking in their boots over your upcoming letter

In my world, when a manager/boss decides leave thier employer, most business is run without major interuption in the day to day operations until a replacement is found. When a boss decides to shut down business the employees are layed off and forced to look for work elsewhere.

Thunder Bay Media. Good work

I might have asked this

MS. Campbell, is it your position that if the house sat for those additional four weeks that those "bills" you speak of would have passed. Please tell us how.

Ms. Campbell, if Mr. Mauro is oversimplifying things, does that mean that basically he is accurate and now it is a matter of degree. He thinks 2 out of 10 and you think 4 out of 10 for seriousness.

Ms. Campbell, it is nice to see all is well in your riding. Maybe work for them, we already have two NDP elected officials doing nothing here.

I am trying to decide who I dislike the most, her, or her predecessor, Howard, I hate everyone and everything Hampton

This woman seems to like the sound of her own voice.
