THUNDER BAY -- Cliffs Natural Resources is hoping to have the environmental assessment on its proposed chromite mine in the Ring of Fire approved by mid 2014.

Still in the early stages of that EA, the resource development company held an open house Wednesday evening at the Airlane hotel outlining the assessment process and giving an overview of the project.

“We’re working to complete the provincial planning documents, which are called the terms of reference, and we’re starting to do the environmental assessment where we compare the existing environment with the projected project impacts,” said Jason Aagenes, director of environmental affairs for Cliffs Ferroalloys.

“We’ll also look at ways to reduce, eliminate or mitigate any negative impacts,” he added.

Cliffs have held a number of open houses in municipalities and First Nations across Northern Ontario during the process of trying to get the mine up and running, and Aagenes said they encourage the public to come out to get familiar with the project and offer their input.

Most of the questions they receive are about the environmental impacts of the proposed mine and the job opportunities available.

“The main purpose for open houses like this is making sure we have a fulsome and inclusive environmental assessment,” Aagenes said.

Cliffs is aiming to submit the EA by mid-2013 and hope its approved the following year.

I think we should keep with the Thunder Bay trend and have a plebiscite on this! There is no way we can continue with this project unless there is a plebiscite!!!

I suupport Friends of SkyHigh's Plebiscite on this issue. As long as there is an initial plebiscite to ensure having the plebiscite is what we should be doing.

HA HA funny...Maybe we should have a plebisite to see if sky high's post should have been posted in the first place.

What?!!? Shame on you for straying away from your usual comments. Are you not going to blame mayor Hobbs for any delays or negative outcomes?

Yes, the approval for Cliffs would be a good thing in order for this show to get going and ground break and see something tangible for a change rather then have meetings and dates for this and that.
Sky High, we don't need a pleb for this.
You are missing the point here because if you are referring to the muiti plex that is a totally different scenario.
Get your rwestling tights and meet me in hell in a cell. I defend my WWE championship this weekend against Ryback.

The EA for the mine is great.
Howevers as a taxpayer what concerns me is, the money to build a road up north. Not to metion satisifing the myriad wants of communities on the way that must be placated with power lines and roads. Now that worries me as a taxpayer.
Look at google earth north of greenstone, look at the swamp, small lakes , a few big rivers all in muskeg .Now it will take billions of tax payers dollars to build a secure roads bed for a /road railine, and or with a power line along side it ( this will probably go through pickle lake, but I say stick to disel generators for now )
Hundred of miles through swampy, muskeg lake and over a few big rivers.
All based on exactly what nvju says, commodities.
And if they prices tank?
its all for naught.
