THUNDER BAY -- Fire crews were working to put out a pellet bin fire on the north side of the city Tuesday morning.

Firefighters were called to Canada Malting around 7 a.m. where Platoon Chief Les Newman says they ran into problems that stalled fire fighting efforts.

"There were some issues, when we first started dealing with the fire, with a leaking standpipe system," he told CPKR Radio. "There was a lot of excess water flying around and we've since cut power to the building so it is complicating issues."

Newman added the standpipe system is being repaired by mill staff so that water can be pumped to the top of the bin.
