Cat doused in gas, humane society and police investigating

THUNDER BAY -- There is something disturbingly wrong with the kind of behaviour that leads a person to douse an animal in gasoline, says the executive director of the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society.

Maryann Kleynendorst said they were alerted by the Thunder Bay Police Services about a cat that was found doused in gasoline in the 1400 block of Mary Street West.

The cat was brought to the Humane Society Tuesday morning by the family that found him and he had been bathed twice already.

Kleynendorst said they immediately brought him to their veterinarian and they applied a product to him to neutralize the smell and oiliness of the gasoline.

“He seems to be doing very well. He’s quite stressed and it’s hard to tell if he’s lethargic or just exhausted from everything he’s gone through and all the baths he’s had to have,” said Kleynendorst.

The Humane Society has heard reports of other cats possibly drenched in gasoline and the incident is alarming to Kleynendorst.

“I can’t imagine what would cause a person to do something like this. You’d hate to think it’s just a prank. If that is the case, it someone out there thinks this is a funny thing to do to cats, maybe they will see the rest of the community doesn’t find this so funny,” she said.

Kleynendorst said she doesn’t think it’s possible the cat somehow became doused on its own; she said it almost certainly seems deliberate.

“You have to wonder what the person’s next step – end goal was. Was the end goal to ignite this animal, which is almost unimaginable and horrific?” she said.

The investigation is ongoing and Kleynendorst said anyone with any information or who sees an animal in danger can call the Humane Society at 475-8803 or they can call Thunder Bay Police Services.

Wow a really crappy thing for a person to do to an animal.
But cat owners must keep em indoors like the rules state.
There are many out there that have no mercy for cats running around spraying and crapping in their gardens , flower beds etc.
And then wonder why "fluffy" does not come home.

Disgusting - I don't care what reasoning someone would have had, or why this person thought it was okay to do something like this. Clearly not right in the head.

Hundreds of cats are homeless in Thunder Bay either because they were born homeless or they were abandoned by owners. Spay and neuter your pets and keep them safe. Even people who are not animal lovers should be troubled by this behaviour. Many serial killers and other lifelong criminals start out as animal abusers. Please report animal abuse and please support our animal rescues and shelters who take in these unwanted creatures and find them loving homes. Animals are not disposable. Humans domesticated them and we have a responsibility to care for them. They are helpless without us.

Poor little guy.
Glad to hear he is doing okay and now has found a home to boot.
Humanity is sure taking a left turn when you hear about senseless acts like this happening.
Lets hope this is not a trend.
Perhaps the person that did this needs a dose of their own medicine.

Glad the cat is ok. Hope the person that did this gets caught. What is the Humane Society going to do about this? Their job is to enforce animal cruelty laws but that's hard to do when the OSPCA inspector they employed left town 6 months ago and they haven't replaced him yet.

This is my cat, I took Charlie in when he kept coming back to our place to hang out with our other cats and kept staying on the deck over night. I'm going to assume someone had him and abandoned him because he has great manners and is a gentle giant, he is very loving. I don't know what this person was thinking to drench my cat in gasoline but obviously he wanted to get rid of it I'm glad Charlie escaped or he probably would have been set on fire and wouldn't be here today. Anyway enough ranting I just hope they find out who did this. I'm hoping to go visit Charlie today to see how my boy is doing.

Thanks to the humane society for taking him and taking him to the vet to get treated. I appreciate it a lot. Here is a picture of charlie it's kinda blurry. I'm sorry.

I'm definitely not condoning this utterly sick act of animal cruelty but maybe someone in your neighborhood is trying to send a message about the pets that are let out to roam the area . If they doused the cat in gasoline then they certainly could have put a flame to it , this is a warning . The cat is named "Boots" and we adopted him out to a couple on Edward and Christina Street .
10/31/2012 1:13:56 PM
Gord says:
Are you serious??? You consider this sending a message?? This is not sending a message, this is a sick psychopathic behaviour. Maybe the cat scrambled free before the sicko lit the match? Good for you for adopting, but maybe re-think the "message" comment. This is not the act of a sane person sending a message, this person is whacko.

Keep your cat in your yard and this never would happen. We do not allow dogs to run free in the city so why do some people think it is ok to let cats run loose. I keep my dog in my yard and on a leash when I leave my yard so he does not bother anyone else or damage their property. Perhaps of the fine for leting your cat loose were inforced and were a bit larger this would not be a problem.
10/31/2012 8:57:02 AM
stuck? says:
By using this logic, it sounds like it makes it ok for somebody to douse a: dog, hamster, ferret, walking fish, etc etc in gasoline if they got off their leash or fishbowl or out of their yard.

How do you know it would "never happen" if you kept your animal confined to your yard? I'm sure there are people out there who could/may/would/will walk into a yard and torture an animal just because its there. A fence isn't going to stop somebody who is determined.

If I had gigantic, bulging muscles there's still no guarantee that I won't get punched out for saying something stupid to the wrong person; or somebody having some type of vendetta against me for a random reason.

You don't know what can happen. You can keep to yourself for your life and not leave the house, and you may still be suspect to a random B&E.
10/31/2012 3:37:56 PM
conker2012 says:
I never said that it is ok. It is wrong to pour gas on any pet, but people pour gas on ant hills and set them on fire. Why are you not running you the aide of the ants?

I agree that a fence will not stop somebody who is determined, and it is intentional.

What happened if somebody who is afraid of black cats is filling their lawn mower with gas and this cat snuck up on them and scared the whitts out of the person? This person went into a panic and shook their gas can at the cat that they saw was a threat?

How is it fair that this person's personal space was invaded by this cat that caused them all this fear.

What if somebody was draining the gas from their boat and the cat walked past the drain line and knocked it out of the gas can and it spilled all over the cat?

Who's fault is this. THE TRESSPASSING CAT. You cannot assume that this was intentional, what was intentional was the lack of responsibility of the cat owner who let their cat free.

Or what if the cat did this to itself to get media attention and it's 5 minutes of fame. Look at all the potential people wanting to adopt it.

Be careful not to startle conker2012 when he is filling is lawn mower or car at the gas station everybody, you may end up being covered in gas.

stuck? says:
You are right, you never said that it was ok; just like I NEVER CLAIMED THAT YOU SAID THAT IT WAS OK :)

My original and unaltered comment states: "By using this logic, it sounds like it makes it ok for somebody to douse a: dog, hamster, ferret, walking fish, etc etc in gasoline if they got off their leash or fishbowl or out of their yard."

Neither do I condone pouring gas on an anthill to exterminate the ants. I don't even like to kill pesky mosquitoes, that's just my nature.

All that I was trying to say was that there are NO GUARANTEE'S that this cat, or yourself or any other living thing will be safe. There are too many variables to contend with and people not just the weather are changing. Sure you don't always hear about these things and they've happened for probably thousands of years... but I don't think it's right at all to say these things can be avoided by keeping your pet locked up/leashed.

Ultimately yes, it comes down to the owner. But you can't be there 24/7.

Sadly this kind of thing happens more than people want to believe. It just doesn't make the news when a Rescue group takes in these abused or neglected pets.

I hope this serves as a reminder of just one more reason why cats should not be free-roaming (besides the fact that it is a city by-law).

hubbabubba says:
That is so sick, very disturbing, usually people who do this with animals start with animals before they move on to people. Sick and very disturbing to hear this is going on in our community of Thunder Bay. What is wrong with you to douse a cat in gasoline, let alone any animal?
10/31/2012 11:14:31 AM
CM Punk says:
Whether there is a city by law or not, that is not the point here. The point is a sick human committed a inhumane act on a poor animal. That is wrong.
You wanna complain, how about the people who walk their dogs at night and don't pick up their poop because nobody sees them. The city should adopt a surtax or something for dog owners.

Are people here actually laying blame with the owners of the cat?? pets are not supposed to wonder, yet they do from time to time, they don't know that they shouldn't. Little kids trying to be tough know they shouldn't abuse animals

forrealz says:
Wow! I am not sure what is more appalling, the fact that someone did this to a poor animal or that there are actually people who read the article and still decided to comment that if the animal was kept inside this wouldn't have happened. Any person that thinks that and all the people that "agreed" with those comments should be ashamed of themselves. That's just the same as saying a woman wouldn't have gotten raped if she wasn't wearing a skimpy outfit...just disgusting that peoples minds justify things that way. Give your head a shake!
10/31/2012 12:43:04 PM
conker2012 says:
These are not the same that a person gets raped because of what they are wearing, people have the right to wear what they want and walk free in public, cats do not have those rights. Don't get me wrong pouring gas on any living animal is inhumane, but the law is the law.

Think of it this way, if a bar serves alcohol to a 16 year old who then leaves the bar drunk gets in a car and gets killed in a car crash where the other driver was speeding 50km/hr over the limit, who is at fault? the bar or the other driver or both?

If the cat was kept at home there is not story here.

If the person did not pour the gas then there is
no story.

Unfortunately two people did wrong and the cat had to suffer.

According to Chapter 237, Article 5 of the animal by-laws, the owner is responsible to prevent their animal from tresspassing and being at large within the city.

If you love your pet, keep it on a Leash.

Sui Generis says:
No one is saying that the cat deserved it. What they ARE saying is that cats are meant to be kept indoors, and, if you allow your animals to wander, illegally, then they may come in contact with someone intent on abusing it.

However, to credit the person who posted the picture and claims ownership of the cat, anyone who has ever taken in a stray cat knows that it's next to impossible to KEEP them indoors after they've lived outside for an extended period of time. Anytime the door opens, they'll bolt. I'd be careful about laying blame against anyone except the sick individual who abused this poor cat.
10/31/2012 3:41:20 PM
moonpie says:
If a cat was doused and set on fire the pain and suffering would be tremendous. On that same note, if a roaming cat was attacked by a large dog that cat would suffer tremendously or die horribly. If a cat was run over but continued to live, the suffering would be horrific. In all of those scenarios you don't think the cats owner is partially to blame for being negligent and allowing their pet to roam loose? We don't even know that this was an intentional act. The cat sat still long enough to be doused in gas but managed to get away before a match was lit? Sounds unlikely. Cats tend to run and jump a lot when outdoors, it might have been chasing a bird and accidentally jumped in to an old barrel fully of greasy old fuel/water, who knows. Anyone that has ever put gas in their vehicle knows it only takes a couple drops to make your hands reek of gasoline.
10/31/2012 6:44:26 PM
spooner19 says:
I can't believe people would use such idiotic logic such as if the cat was kept indoors this would not happen. So is it ok if a squirrel goes on your property or a fox then its ok to pour gas on it? What is wrong with you people this story has nothing to do with the cat being able to roam, there are many stray cats, dogs, other animals roaming around, its just something any normal person would not do. This person is sick! and really needs there head examined. Don't try to justify it by saying the cat should have been indoors and put the blame on the owner, that kind of thinking just encourages these sick individuals to do stuff like this.
10/31/2012 7:24:55 PM
moonpie says:
You're making assumptions, no one knows for certain if the cat was intentionally doused in gasoline or if it was an accident.

If you left your 2 year old kid at the playground and someone kidnapped them are you as the "owner" not partially to blame??? Of course you are!!! Its your responsibility to keep your kids AND your pets safe.

"MikeR" say's this is his cat, "ring of fire dude" says they adopted the cat out to someone else, then the caption under the photo says the cat will likely be adopted by the people that found him. If its MikeR's cat why isn't he taking it back?
11/1/2012 1:51:33 AM
Mime says:
Any type of justification is sick. No animal deserves this treatment....shame on the abuser and shame on anyone who tries to make excuses!
