Have Your Say:
Open House for Replacement of Trowbridge Falls Park Bridge October 31, 2012 –
The City of Thunder Bay Parks Division, along with JML Engineering Ltd., will be hosting a Public Open House information session outlining the proposed replacement of the Trowbridge Falls Park Pedestrian Bridge on Monday, Nov. 5 from 5-8 pm, at the Chapples Golf Course Club House.

A presentation by the Consulting Team will be made at 7 pm.

The existing bridge has been closed since the fall of 2010 due to structural deficiencies that were discovered during routine engineering inspections. In the summer of 2011, Sostratus Engineering prepared a preliminary report examining different options for a new bridge or refurbishing the old bridge.

Based on this report, the Parks Division determined that a new pre-engineered steel truss bridge would be the most cost effective long-term solution. This summer, the City Parks Division released a Request for Proposals for the design, engineering and contract administration for a new bridge in Trowbridge Falls Park.

JML Engineering was the successful firm. At the Open House, citizens will have the opportunity to review and comment on the proposed works that will include the demolition of the existing bridge structure and the construction of a new three-metre-wide, pre-engineered steel truss pedestrian bridge, concrete abutments and access trails.

Everyone is welcome and citizen input is encouraged. For more information on this project or if you have any questions, comments or concerns, contact:

Campers in the park better start locking up their possessions again! Coolers, booze and even tents go missing when them little hooligans have bridge access.

Campers in the park should have always been protecting their things in the first place... If you aren't going to take measures to take care of and protect your belongings, you don't deserve them.

I agree....but a tent? You can't even leave your site for crying out loud! On the flip side though, I'm all for the new bridge, makes for nice walks and mountain bike rides.

This was actually addressed in the design of the new bridge. If you go to the open house, you'll see how.

CLOSED.... People are using it even though there is a sign there.

I'd like to see something that sort of pays tribute to the old bridge...

If these engineering inspections are routine, then why weren't these structural deficiencies found earlier and the motions set in place to reinforce or replace the bridge before it had to be closed to the public for so long? We've gone without use of this bridge for two years, perhaps three by the time it gets replaced. I find it difficult to believe that one day the bridge is deemed structurally safe by engineers and the next it isn't. This leads me to my second question. With what frequency are these routine inspections conducted? Are major infrastructure inspected by City engineers every 3 months? 6 months? 12 months?

I cant get over the fact that the city could have added that bridge to the list of stuff to do for that construction crew doin the new road right beside trowbridge...I mean all equiptment was there & all the man power was there too...they could have had the bridge done as the road was completed almost a year early! They could have hads that bridge done in no time!

interesting comment except the City had nothing to do with the highway project and road that you are describing, it was a provincial project not a City one.

Open house for a little bridge like that. Just build the bridge or not and be done with it.

Should have been done last year. These are some of the best recreational trails in the city. At this pace we will have a replacement completed in 2016.

Mind you there is another bridge upstream a km.
11/1/2012 9:46:33 AM
hadenough says:
You bring up a good point.

The bridge upstream was built for snowmobiles by the trail association. Now that this trail system has been closed and the association has given up, the bridge likely has to be removed. Maybe the City should assume responsibility for the snowmobile bridge and take it over. That would save us some money.

Not how things are done around here.

People have been complaining that the city has not been open about its processes. Certainly this project is minor in the grand scheme of things, but the fact that they are taking the time to show us what's going on is a good thing.

My children and I miss the bridge and would like to see it repaired. We enjoy the parks on both sides of the river and were looking forward to making use of the new safer overpass to get back home.
