593 claims filed

Kari Chiappetta has had a busy few days.

The manager of the Thunder Bay and Area Disaster Relief Fund said they received nearly 400 claims in the final three days before Wednesday’s Halloween deadline, upping the total number of claims to 593.

Chiappetta called it a really rough count at this point.

“It’s about what we thought we would be getting,” she said. “This week alone we received 369 of those. So in three days we had 369 claims come through. It’s been extremely busy this week. We had lineups out the door yesterday until 5:45 p.m.”

The deadline to file was 4:30 p.m., but with so many victims of the May 28 flood and sewage back-up disaster waiting to file, she said there was no way they could close their doors on time.

Chiappetta said she has no idea what the number of claims will mean for the amount the committee needs to fundraise to pay eligible ones out, so for now they’re sticking with the original $5 million goal, an amount the province would triple through two-for-one funding through the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program.

After taking a cursory look at the claim forms, Chiapetta said they range anywhere from $1,000 to $85,000.

She estimated it will take about two months or more to vet the claims and begin paying them out. The deadline to donate to the fund has been extended until Jan. 31.

$85K You have to be joking. What are they asking for, a new house?

Sui Generis says:
There's a person down the street from me that had over 90k in damages. When you consider structure damage, interior damage, and personal property, it's not difficult to come up with high numbers.

Remember, there were people who's houses LITERALLY fell apart.

Tom Sanderson says:
Any house that literally fell apart should have been condemned prior to this event. This, as some say was a sewer backup, not a river eroding banks where houses could fall in as the banks gave way. I'd say someone is feeding you a little BS with this 90K figure. I'm sure it's not difficult to come up with high numbers if you go to your neighbours damage pile and take a few expensive items to boost your insurance claim as some did and were caught in the act by insurance adjusters and that is no BS.

Doesn't matter if they had 400,000.00 in damages. If they had no insurance, they are not legally entitled to recover. They'd better be happy with what they get and use the first few hundred dollars they recover to go buy some insurance like responsible people do.

Insurance companys wont sell me flood coverage. None.

Sewer back up I had, but you can guarantee that I wont be to get it at renewal time now. All thanks to the citys incompetents!!

Since they havent fixed it yet, or at least arent telling the citizens whats happened or is happening, whats going to happen this Spring? and the next one?

Why is a government of the people of Thunder Bay not telling those same people whats going on? Thats a very scarier scenario. Who is in charge here? City government's job is to manage city (our municipal) services, not operate under a dark vail of secrecy.

The KGB were more open than this diaster council and manager. Perhaps its time to storm the castle and hot tar these imbecilies?

As Fletcher pointed out previously, not everything is going to be covered. Just the essentials.
So your big screen tv, leather sofa, sports collectibles, computer, brass pole, etc. will not be replaced.
Just essentials such as a furnace, insulation, flooring, drywall, washer and dryer.

85k won't buy you much of a house aruond here.

The city has been assessing houses at almost double their value so they can have more revenue to blow without making it LOOK like they raised taxes.

MPAC assessment is not done by the City, it's a provincial organization and it's hardly double although it is pretty high.

One main thought in relation to this story....with 400 claims filed in the final three days prior to the cut off date/time....was every one asleep at the switch.???

I have a complete set of the forms right on my desk....I picked up the document out of curiosity.....seeing that I am from Missouri....I had to see them for myself....and in doing so....it is as straight forward as they can possibly be.

Most puzzling....is those folks who have waited until the eleventh hour....it makes no sense what so ever.

Now comes the most difficult part...come the New Year of 2013 finding a way to tell those with claims that they will at best receive 5 cents on the dollar at best....because the targeted goal of 5 million was never truly attainable....therefore you are all S.O.L.

Finally do we honestly think that tax payers are going to anti up to this fund with the fear of a multi- million class action looming at Watkins law. This time jimmyboy you get to rant at coucil and moyor and justly so

The biggest fallacy I've seen in regards to this whole issue, since those involved in claiming flood relief are not involved in the lawsuit.

Now Sui, quit lying. The people claiming flood relief are all involved in the lawsuit. Humour me please, and let us know who you believe are involved in the lawsuit. lol, quick come up with something good.

HelenaHandbasket says:
I will come up with one for her. There are 593 people who made claims and there are only 6 people involved in the law suit. 593 - 6 DOES NOT equal EVERYONE. So how about YOU Sky High come up with better math skills?
11/3/2012 9:11:22 PM
sky high says:
Well now who pulled the wool over your eyes Helena? Where'd you get this figure of only 6 people signed onto this multi-million dollar lawsuit against the hard working taxpayers of Thunder Bay? I'll tell you where-from some other misinformed person that was allowed to comment in here, and you believed them. I suspect you are Sui with a different login name this time but listen: there are many more than just 6 in the class action lawsuit against the City of Thunder Bay. Goodnight, and might I suggest a bit of research next time.

SadButTrue says:
At current fundraising levels there is about 3.3 million if I'm correct on the 1.1 million dollar mark that theyve raised by the city. With 593 claims that would allot $5,564 to each claim at the moment.

WIth the claim prices ranging from 1k to 85k its hard to guess what the numbers add up to. But the city could take those 593 claims, add up the total value and have the maximum payout amount very easily. Beyond that they could then review claims for the items that don't count. At least they would know the maximum dollar value needed to be raised. Perhaps its already reached.

How many of these claims are FALSE, insurance should start investigating these late claims
11/2/2012 8:45:04 AM
Sui Generis says:
You had to provide proof and documentation with the claim. You can't just claim an item with no proof of it's previous existence and proof of it's damage during the sewage backup. Pictures, receipts, estimates, etc, were all required with the form.

These claims will be investigated and the fraudsters will be punished. $85k. Hahaha. Who are they trying to fool.

conker2012 says:
As a suggestion the 593 home owners should have recorded the make and model of their furnace, and or water heater that needs to be replaced. Now just have eco superior do an energy audit of the flooded home. Make the changes, new furnace, water heater, insulation upgrades and claimed these upgrades under the eco energry retrofit program that the province is still running (the feds pulled their part) and these people could collect up to 5K in additional rebates from the government for work that has to be done anyways.

I'm kind of surprised that only 193 applications where done before the deadline. I guess Thunder Bay is a last minute town in every sense of the word.

my reply "itshell"....once again you do not make any intelligent comment to the story....only to my post....again I am a numbers person and with that said, quite a few others do seem to appreciate my thoughts....and the direction in which they are heading....that being well into the next calendar year....when it all comes to a head..!

If you want to know why the City is keeping mum on the subject, can you spell l-a-w-s-u-i-t? Once the lawyers get involved, there will be no information forthcoming.
And I'm sorry, but if I was buying a house in a flood prone area and couldn't get insurance...no sale! I don't like gambling with my possessions, and if you chose to do so, consider yourself lucky that there is fundraising to help you out, otherwise, you would be screwed! Don't get me wrong, I feel for you, and have dontated, but my God, people need to use common sense when purchasing a home. The east end is prone to floods, Northwood is built on a swamp...and you wonder why you "can't" get flood insurance? THINK ABOUT IT!

Lawsuit or not the city officials have a contractual duty to live up to. If it involves them admitting facts that end up being used against them thats too bad. That would mean they acted with negligence.

If they knowingly remain quiet they are acting maliciously.

Is that the M.O. of a legitimate and responsible city government? Is that what you expect from a city council? Thats bordering on unlawful, let alone irresponsible.

Next Im a 5th generation East Ender. We've never had a flood before so you can stop making that up. The whole south is on low lying land does that mean we need to move the whole southern parts of the city?

We used to have flood insurance available to us when we bought this house however back in 96ish when North Dakota and Wpg flooded our company no longer offered us coverage. Also in case youve lived under a rock insurance company have all come under new ownerships and conglomerates.

but you just proved that our houses are now worth less. Suit it is
