THUNDER BAY -- Drugs, booze and a gun were found in an RV last month as a U.S. couple tried to cross the border into Canada.

On Oct. 2, the couple were attempting to cross into Canada at Pigeon River when the Canadian Border Services Agency decided to search the vehicle after the couple said they had nothing to declare.

The male driver was arrested for smuggling after a 12-gauge shotgun was found.

He was then rearrested, along with a female passenger, after drug paraphernalia turned up in a cocoa container and more than 26 grams of marijuana was found in the vehicle’s freezer.

Agents then found more than 17 litres of undeclared alcohol.

Terms of release were paid for the gun because it’s not a restricted firearm. The marijuana and alcohol were seized and the couple were turned away.

Overall Pigeon River saw more than 42,000 travellers in October, which is down 6.7 per cent from last year, in more than 21,000 vehicles, down 4.7 per cent.

Around 1,600 secondary searches were conducted.
