THUNDER BAY -- A neighbour who lives across the street from the site of the city’s latest murder says it was only a matter of time.
Forty-eight-year-old Martin Fabian Achneepineskum was stabbed to death Sunday afternoon at 229 McIntyre Street. Police have charged a 32-year-old man with second-degree murder and two counts of breach of probation in the incident.
They say the two Thunder Bay men knew each other and that alcohol was a factor.
“He was rushed to the hospital and later succumbed to his injuries,” Thunder Bay Police Service Const. Julie Tilbury said Monday morning.
According to city police, at about 3:25 p.m. on Sunday officers responded to a call about a man being attacked within a residence in the 200 block of McIntyre Street. Upon arrival they found an injured 48-year-old male, who was taken to hospital where he died a short time later.
Marvyl Hanley lives across the street. She was sitting in her home with her granddaughter when a frantic man knocked on the door saying that his brother had been stabbed in the leg and that someone was also trying to stab him.
Hanley let the man in to call 911. She sat with him and waited until police arrived.
“He was shaky and white. He couldn’t talk. He asked me to dial the phone,” she said.
Hanley lets people from the house, which she estimates to be up to 10 people living there, use her phone from time to time. She also gives them change when she can.
The people living there aren’t bad people, she said. But Hanley, along with several other neighbours, said people are constantly coming and going from the home.
The house is described by neighbours as a loud exception to an otherwise quiet area.
“It was just a matter of time. Police are there every week,” she said. “There’s always trouble like fights.”
Tilbury said the Criminal Investigation Branch is still trying to figure out what happened.
Names are being withheld until next of kin are notified.
The 32-year-old suspect appeared in video court Monday.
