THUNDER BAY -- Officials with the District Health Unit are continuing their investigation of what's suspected to be a food-borne illness that's left several people across the city ill.

The investigation was launched following reports of large numbers of people displaying a variety of symptoms following some catered events last week.

The symptoms include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, which is something Health Unit officials say is typical of a Norwalk-like illness.
Symptoms usually persist for 24-to-48 hours.

Officials say people are especially susceptible at this time of year given the number of large gatherings that offer food to guests.

They're advising people who displays the symptoms noted, contact the Health Unit.

Why the secrecy? Name the events. Maybe there are more people with symptoms who don't know they were ill because of something they consumed. Seriously! Large numbers of people. Where's the transparency?

When do we get to hear who the caterer is? Seems to me that when This Old Barn was being investigated, their name was public. With several holiday functions over the next couple of weeks, I'd like to know what to avoid!

So this newspaper thoroughly trashes a local business who had an unfortunate outbreak following a Mother's Day brunch earlier this year, yet remains very generic regarding which events and which caterer were involved in this one. Why is that? Early reports seemed to indicate that they had more information than is now in the article. What has changed? Do some reporting here.

How come I heard through this same company who the caterer is half a day ago and you're still wondering who it is? I tell you, some people will ask the same questions over and over and over again till the day they expire, even though the answers are public knowledge

Those are the symptoms of dozens of cold and flu bugs. Norwalk? Not likely.

razor, cold and flu "bugs" are virus related. Flu is for influenza which is an upper respiratory illness. Cold symptoms are typically runny/stuffed, sneezing, and sore throat. Flu "bugs" are the above along with headache, muscle pains and sometimes fever. Noro-like viruses have symptoms of nausea, diarrhea, and sometimes vomiting.

How come you do not mention the catering company, yet the health unit does mention it in their release?

Does anybody here watch the TBT News? Or Chronicle Journal?? They said it was Linked to Maltese Groceries catered events, and they voluntarily suspended their catering service. Read the article posted by trent just above:

Pay attention people before you started wildly throwing out comments about secrecy and such.

I totally agree with you. Most people come here read the headline and start spouting off without reading the article. That is the Thunder Bay way..negative criticism. Barely a comment on a good news article in this town. Maltese was named on the evening news yesterday.
