THUNDER BAY -- Freezing rain and snow during this morning's commute was likely a factor in a couple of crashes that could have had serious consequences.

One of those collisions took place at the corner of  Red River Road and Algonquin Avenue, when a car slid into the back end of a school bus. There were no children on board the bus at the time.

Police say the driver of the car escaped with just minor injuries.

OPP responded to a single-vehicle accident around the same time on Highway 527, near Mount Baldy Road.
Police say a pickup truck lost control and rolled over into a ditch.

The 48-year-old female driver was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Officials with the OPP say this was just one of several mishaps brought on by slick road conditions.

Let me say one thing about the 527,,,not a hwy that the general public should use.
I commute every day on that streach of road, this morning i drove it,and it was glare ice from 11/17 to the dorion cut off ,with not one sander out there, not sure if T.W.D pays for the salt out of there own pockets, but if they where doing there jobs as they should have been, this poor lady would have never had this crash.,,,after the crash the road was salted and clear and safe!!!
These idiots,,or sorry, the patrol manager should be fired, this happens every year,,,next time i dont see a salt truck out there ,,,im calling the opp

It takes about 15 minutes to go from one side of the city to the other. Hardly a commute.
This is not New York City.

Commuting is regular travel between one's place of residence and place of work or full-time study.
It has nothing to do with distance or time.

Very rarely is it actually "slick road conditions" that cause an accident - its actually people driving inappropriately. Slow down when its slippery people!

I'm never surprised at the increase in accidents around the Christmas season. I've seen some of the worst driving ever this week. Three cars running red lights after the light is already red on more than one occasion. Excess speeding in 40 km/h zones. Too many other infractions to list. You people disgust me. I don't feel sorry for anyone involved in these accidents as it was more than likely your own doing. Use some common sense out there......if you have any.

I agree, Razor, just yesterday I saw four, yes FOUR cars in a ROW make an illegal left turn from John onto Memorial, going directly into the curb lane. No wonder they call that particular infraction "the Thunder Bay"!!

527 is the worst busy road in the area. There should be a plow/sander up and down that thing non stop. Every day on my way to work at Lac Des Iles, i see at least 1 vehicle in an accident. There are over 500 of us at the mine that use that road every, not to mention the traffic from Armstrong constantly aswell

Hwy.527, posted at 80 kph...but EVERYONE seems to drive it, doing at least 100 kph.
