A Christmas Eve chase on the Trans Canada Highway between Marathon and Nipigon netted police a pair of fugitives wanted on Canada-wide warrants.

The OPP say they arrested two suspects they alleged fled a routine traffic stop east of Marathon, stole gas from a station west of the Northern Ontario community and were finally taken down in a stolen black Hydundai SUV when OPP used a tire deflation device to immobilize the vehicle.

The two occupants were wanted in conjunction with an incident in Fredericton, N.B., where police allege the suspects tried to abduct a female at knifepoint and then stole her vehicle.

The female driver, 42-year-old Kelly Dawn Maguire of Saint John, N.B., was charged with flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two charges of possession of stolen property, theft under $5,000 and being unlawfully at large.

The male passenger, 54-year-old Ralph Neil Lagimodiere, also of Saint John, was charged with two counts of possession of stolen property, theft under $5,000 and being unlawfully at large.

Both suspects were taken into custody awaiting further investigation.

I was driving home for the holidays Christmas Eve and saw a police cruiser blocking one side of the highway. My boyfriend was driving and had slowed and almost came to a stop beside the police car, thinking that it was a ride program. Upon approaching the cruiser, the officer waved us through holding something in his arms. Little did we know that it was spike belt and just seconds after we drove through, the suspects flew around the corner towards us and drove over the belt! It was fortunate that the fleeing vehicle did not crash into us or another car because another cruiser was only a few seconds behind the fleeing vehicle. I'm glad things ended as they did, but it was quite an exciting story to tell once we got home!
