THUNDER BAY -- The shipping season is approaching its end, but that didn't stop the port of Thunder Bay from seeing the most grain in a December since 1999.

Last month more than 932,000 tonnes of grain came through Thunder Bay. CEO Tim Heney says the loss of the wheat board has proved beneficial.

Heney also says there are four more ships scheduled to come through the port before they officially close for the season.

Heney also believes the port's new crane has been a welcome addition, even though they were only able to use it a couple times.

He says he hopes to use the crane at least 10 times next season.

Its very nice to see Thunder Bay's industries- new and old ones - doing very well.. its just a sign of great things to come here in the future. Mining will be the icing on the cake! 13 mines are set to open in the next 6 years. It will be like the Fort McMurray in regards to jobs and even rent could shot up very high for the continued demand in housing and of course housing is still cheap in Thunder Bay, wait until 2017/2018, Then people will start to AT LEAST see housing match the national avg of 365k a house in Tbay, rather then the 180k it is now that the CMHC stated in Dec, 2012 stats.
