Renovations granted

THUNDER BAY -- Paul Pugh says he likes to joke with out-of-town politicians that Thunder Bay managed to convince the Hells Angels to donate their clubhouse to a good cause.

What the McKellar Ward councillor neglects to mention is the fact they did so at gunpoint.

That chapter in the city’s past has been long forgotten, the heavily armored house now the property a community organization dedicated to improving the neighbourhood around them.

On Wednesday Evergreen a United Neighbourhood took the next step to improve the building itself, the recipients of a $76,200 Ontario Trillium Foundation grant they plan to use for renovations, including a new peaked roof and insulation.

Linda Bruins, the organization’s co-ordinator, said having a permanent home will make their task much easier moving forward.

“We felt what a great transformation to go from a place of shame for the community somewhat, to a very positive thing. So we’re hoping this will help keep the neighbourhood on a positive track,” Bruins said, hoping it’s the last time people refer to the building as the former Hells Angels clubhouse.

“Basically it will be a place for community meetings. We’re really challenged in this neighbourhood for people to meet. So our board of directors can have meetings here, just to plan all of our activities.”

MPP Bill Mauro (Lib., Thunder Bay-Atikokan) called it money well spent.

“Communities and neighbourhoods really are integral and important, I believe, to people’s feelings of security and happiness,” Mauro said. “And I think over the last 20 or 30 years that dynamic has changed and the work that Linda and her board and all the volunteers are doing in this neighbourhood is an incredibly worthwhile project for us to support.

“People need something to rally around. They need something to rely on. They need something they can count on.”

Pugh called it a success story, one that’s starting to grow.

“Evergreen has sprouted offsprings,” Pugh said.

"So we’re seeing new evergreens – well, they’re called something different – beginning to go in other parts of the city. We are a city of communities and it’s absolutely crucial that we revive, restore and strengthen the feeling of community in neighbourhoods and it’s really gratifying. It’s really a thing for the future that our city is starting to work that Linda and Evergreen began starting to develop in other parts of the city.”

Wednesday also marked the start of Evergreen’s annual winter carnival.

Seriously? You would rather live next to a gang? Your a prime example of what kind of thinking that needs to be changed in this city.

Linda and her organization are an amazing group of people trying to better the lives of every in their neighborhood. We need more people like this to stand up and make a change at the grass roots, not the kind of backwards small minded thinking like yours.

I've lived in this neighbourhood for more than 10 years. HA had no impact on quelling crime in this area, although that seems to be a widespread myth.

Has crime risen? Yes. Is it confined to this area? No. Therefore, it's a universal issue, not a neighbourhood one. Crime happened in this area previous to HA leaving, and their leaving has nothing to do with increased crime rates across the entire city.

Congratulations Evergreen! Linda has done amazing things for this neighbourhood, and my kids enjoy all the community activities you initiate. See you at the winter carnival tonight!

Someone had to take the lead and bring back the neighborhood. This area is the oldest settled area in our city. Many immigrants raised their families here. It was once vibrant. Evergreen is trying to instill that once again in the neighbours. It is working, but things take time. Instead of being negative look at the positive. Movie nights in the park, weekly family drop ins. All of this is being done by volunteers and families who want to take pride. Congrats to all the hard work and to those who will benefit.

I hate to agree on this one but the H.A. did keep other gangs and criminal element in the city under control.
The H.A. were the police for those that couldnt go to the police with their problems. They took care of problems for users, dealers and street type people. It has become far too common to hear about someone in serious condition after being beaten by four others, everybody acts like they are gangsters now. The H.A. were very visable in the city so they were targets. Smoke and mirrors to make the people with their heads in the sand that don't have a clue about whats really going on in this city feel safe.

Congratulations Evergreen. A long overdue celebration for you!

Dear leith,
Such wonderful journalism here. Kudos to you and the entire Dougall team for bringing to light how the HA donated this property to Evergreen at gunpoint and how Mr.Pugh neglected to point that out. Such wit! Unlike my counterpart, dontlistentome, I'm personally enthralled by your journalistic prowess and prose. Do keep us riveted with your humorous take on your world around you.

Fact: The Hells Angels once operated and owned this building. Fact: Police stormed the place, using a battering ram, with guns drawn, to take it away from them. Fact: Police then turned the facility over to Evergreen at a later date. Posting here is a privilege, not a right. Act civilly, or go away. Dispute the story all you want, but start repeatedly hurling insults at any of our reporters and you're not welcome here.

Fact: i can't seem to win here. I compliment your journalism and you still have a bee in your bonnet. Fact: I think mentioning the whole "At gun point" point, really paints a vivid image that definitely reinforces the positive nature of this announcement. Fact: The attorney general 'sold' evergreen the house, but only after city council approved a rezoning request. It is all too evident that posting here is a 'privilege', much akin to providing objective news reporting to the public. Surely, supplying anything less than utter objectivity and fact-based news stories would be a breach of the public trust in the media. Thankfully, you all at Dougall take this mandate so seriously, it is appreciated. Civility is earned, it too is not a presumed right. There is a difference between being critical of someone's supposed craft and public responsibility to insulting them directly. One point we do agree on is that ultimately you decide who is welcome here and who is not. That is evident!

Once you commit to this old shack, you will need to put your hand out for as long as you own the building. Not a smart move. With many churches closing their doors, there are better prostpects. After all that 75k is tax dollars and should't be going into private interests. Let's see how that 75k will be spent. As a taxpayer, I don't want my money going into an old shack, I would prefer the money go into food and clothing for the desperate.
