THUNDER BAY -- A south Neebing arena was evacuated after an ammonia leak Tuesday morning.

Thunder Bay Police Service and Thunder Bay Fire Rescue were on scene at the Thunder Bay Tournament Centre just before 10 a.m. Tuesday after an employee discovered the leak.

Employees were evacuated from the building. Police had Mountain Road blocked off around the arena as a precaution.

“We assembled a hazmat team and entered the building and stared to investigative,” fire chief John Hay said, confirming that there was a leak.

Hay said fire crews stopped the leak but another team had to be sent in to confirm it. Air quality tests will now be done. There’s no estimate on when the arena will reopen.

It’s the second time that an area arena has recently been shut down due to ammonia.

NorWest Arena had an ammonia leak last December.

Another one? Someone in this city needs some more training. Pathetic.

You do know that both of these arenas are privately run and are run by separate entities, don't you? On top of that the NorWest arena is not even in the city of Thunder Bay.

Unless it's contracted out to a business from another city, it's still privately run by "someone in this city", who apparently does "need some more training". Or equipment needs to be better maintained.

I don't recall one of the five city run arenas having this issue so it's obviously whoever has been contracted to maintain NorWest and the Tournament Centre. Considering they're not too far apart it's probably the same company doing both.

You are assuming a lot, and I mean a lot, based on your limited knowledge for the 2 totally different scenarios. Also check you history, there have been leaks at the other arenas (including both curling clubs)over the years however they happened when the internet wasn't a major source of information.

Why does everyone always assume that if someone goes wrong the City had something to do with it...

The Wolf said it all pretty much. The two rinks in question aren't run by the city, though the city "owns" the Tournament Centre. It is privately run...but it isn't run very well. Am kind of hoping the city takes back management of the facility before it is too late. It has such potential, but the management company in there is too concerned with it's hotel.

That rink is the newest in the city but is in terrible shape. The up keep there is sub par. Its dirty and run down. They are letting that rink fall apart. You can tell its not city run.

Not in the city yet it's on city water and so are all the homes on mountain.....hmm

TC is in the city, that's why it is on city water. City limits end further up HWY 61.

Tiredofit says:
The Tournament Centre is within city limits, the NorWest Arena is in Stanley. They pay it's taxes just like everyone on Mountain Rd. that's where city water ends, those on Loch Lommond Rd are all on wells.

So.. . Ohyesidid!

There was an ammonia leak at the Fort William Gardens back in March of 2006.

The Thunder Bay Tournament Centre building is owned by the City of Thunder Bay and operated by a management group under a thirty year lease. so the city has alot to do with it.

Tom Sanderson says:
It doesn't matter who owns or manages this arena. The problem is the ammonia leak which in all probability resulted from equipment failure. A broken gasket was the cause of the leak at the NorWest Arena.

Murillorules says:
Norwest is owned and managed by the Municipality of Oliver Paipoonge, the Tournament Centre is owned by the city but privately run. The Norwest ice plant is maintained and serviced by a company from Winnipeg (no local companies are certified to do the work) and has been and is maintained properly. Some times things break. Or leak.
I'm sure some of the know it all posters above own cars. Presumably nothing has ever broken or needed repair, thanks to proper maintenance.

I owned a house few lots past the old Alpine. Paid city taxes there. TC is in the city. Do some research.
