Gender Issues Centre's director sees Ontario's new Liberal leader as a symbol

THUNDER BAY -- The head of Lakehead University’s Gender Issues Centre says she wants to see women in power who use their experience to change the system.

On Sunday, Premier-designate Kathleen Wynne said that while being the first openly gay leader in the country is exciting, it shouldn’t overshadow hew role as Premier. While she wants to be a role-model for youth, Wynne said she’s not a gay activist.

GIC director Althea Annan said while she congratulates Wynne on her victory, she hasn’t heard anything from the Liberal leader that makes her think changes for marginalized groups are on the way.

“(I’d like to see Wynne) actually take her lived experiences and her realities and work from the standpoint,” Annan said. “You don’t continue to uphold the same systems that have kept you down for this many years.”

While Annan hopes that it does start a conversation about the leaps and bounds women and members in the LGBQT community have made over the years, she sees Wynne as a symbol but not actually a representative of the changes that need to be made.

Although Wynne’s victory shows tolerance, it doesn’t mean that elected officials are more comfortable discussing their sexuality then they were before Wynne won.

“There is this innate fear of really changing the system,” she said.

While his party was ready for an openly gay leader, MPP Bill Mauro (Lib., Thunder Bay-Atikokan) said it will be up to Ontario during election time to see if the province at large is. Anytime a person is elected to office, members of the public will pick and choose why they may or may not like someone.

“People will find reasons to like you and support you and they will find reasons not to like you and not to support you. To me it’s a non-issue,” Mauro said.

Wynne told reporters in Toronto that she doesn’t want her sexual orientation to be an issue over the next few months. Instead the historic moment for her is becoming the country’s sixth female Premier. Wynne said she said women in politics may be reaching a critical mass.

Yet this is what the Liberals & media have been focusing on since the beginning. Sexual orientation has absolutely nothing to do with how qualified someone is for a job so, TBNewswatch, please stop posting articles like this.

Lets not kid ourselves here ,not only is her sexual orientation and appearance going to cost her the next election ,but she came from the McGuinty Cabinet of misspending , Lying and hidden/over taxing . The Liberals will field anybody now a days just to pander the special vote , the Liberals will be lucky if they can muster enough votes in the next election to keep official party status .

I agree. Its all about drama. We've seen this over & over with this government. Set the scene, create the controversy, appear as the bad guys and then show up at the last minute (usually around election day) with the good news.

Sound familiar. Mississauga and Oakville voters would. The drama nightmare turned into two seats in the Lieberal column. The liberal election machine is good, i'll give you that. But the cost to taxpayers is enormous.

Lie, cheat, spend, promise anything. They'll even pay part of your energy bill for you for a while. As long as it gets them re-elected. Liberal motto time and time again. Who cares if the bills get passed to the grandchildren. They can't vote us out right now. Thats tomorrows problem.

In the meanwhile, lets have Billie script more letters that were written by the Toronto liberal brass and have them in this weekends newspaper. Sad

While all the drama is going on, Billie and Mikie are voting in favour of anything that they're told to.

What's wrong with her appearance in your view? You mentioned it in the same sentence as her being gay. Gay people are a reality of everyday life, and not a "special vote" as you say. Also, if the Liberals are just pandering and Wynne's sexual orientation is a cost to her, as you claim, why would they choose her? It seems like you and the many people in Thunder Bay who agreed with your comment have a problem with Wynne being gay. This is why I don't like to read the comments at tbnewswatch. These reflect the small-minded, backward bigotry too prevelent in this city. I know the rest of Ontario and Canada, and even most of the U.S. is light years ahead. Being negative that she may look gay is a horrible and petty comment to make in 2013.

There's nothing wrong with recognizing an historical marker of how far society has progressed. We may still put that aside, and look at the qualities she has relevent to the job at hand. We can walk and chew gum at the same time.

yqt, i have read your countless e-mails telling everyone why the liberals are bad. Can you tell us who you support.

I do not agree with your assessment. I am sure that will mean you will lable me a liberal. I can agree that there have been issues that were bad but many more were great. I am free to believe we have done well by our MPP's. Unlike you, I like what they have brought here.

But tell us who your choice is. Then we are free to ask you some questions about the policies of the party you support, maybe offer some criticism or maybe we can just be like you and say they are just wrong about everything.

Just to help you.

We have a conservative gov't in Ottawa.
We have two NDP members from here in ottawa
We have two liberal members in Toronto

tell me which one you choose, why and then we can have a reasonable discussion. I look foward to it.

Curiously enough, you sound just like lori. Pick whoever you want, obviously you've got you mind made up. Nobody can spend more than Billie and Mikie.

But before you mark you "X", go take a look around the province at look at the spending in Liberal ridings. Look at Mcmeekin (the weasel) in hamilton. Look at the money spent in the Windsor ridings. Look at the money dumped in Toronto.

You're a fool to assume that these arent more vote buying schemes. Call it what you will, they're spending more money that they don;'t have.

But if you want to argue this point, tell us whether it is out children or grandchildrens money that is paing for these promises.

Tell us which money went to line Buchanens pockets. How much went to Friscot. Global Sticks, etc, etc.

Do you really want to talk about the bent hockey sticks on the waterfront and how much NODC money was wasted.

The Libs are experts. At squandering more and buying votes. Billie and Mikie photo ops.

YQT you now have another person to hate. You want to blame the Liberals for the hockey stick art at the Marina. You are whacked. The whole Marina. City decision. vote buying spending sprees. What are the conservatives doing in Canada. Any money coming our way. You dodged the question by the poster. What party do you support. Who would be better for us. You have a conservative gov't in Ottawa. Is that your choice. You keep using your childish words billie and Mikey but you never, ever will tell us who has done more for T.Bay.
I will gladly stop posting this stuff when you give us all a name who has done more for T.Bay.
One name oh expert at everything. As for the debt, keeping pretending it is not happening around the world and only in Ontario. Keep avoiding facts, like the cancelled gas plants the NDP wanted moved, only now they pretend they weren't part of it. So pick a party YQT. Or are you just to afraid to put that out there. I am not Liberal. I support my MPP. who do you support
