In transition

THUNDER BAY -- Mayor Keith Hobbs says the city is in transition and the local Chamber of Commerce agrees.

Hobbs read his annual state of the city address, a speech first given to city council last December, to a sold-out Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce crowd at the Prince Arthur Waterfront Hotel and Suites Wednesday morning.

New housing starts, new development in the private and public sectors and new retailers moving in are all signs that the city is improving.

“We have a lot of areas to work on though social issues, crime issues so it’s not all rosy but from an economic standpoint, a lot of businesses are seeing growth in the city,” Hobbs said.

With more than a dozen proposed mines popping up in the region, the city already sees about $700 million from the sector. It’s a far cry from the $5 billion Sudbury gets, but Hobbs wants to see Thunder Bay at that number one day.

There are 130 value-added companies and 40 mining exploration companies in Thunder Bay.

“We’re already seeing it,” he said.

Chamber president Harold Wilson said the speech shows the city is getting ready. Evidence of development is everywhere.

“I get excited every time I see the cranes,” he said.

A lot of development mentioned by Hobbs comes from the public sector. But Wilson said government is the first in on investment. Eventually the private sector follows, which is starting to happen as the city transforms.

“This is an opportunity for the private sector to really get there as long as the capital is there,” he said.

"Mayor Keith Hobbs says the city is in transition..."

You hit the head on the nail with that statement!

Now let's hope we can pull up from this nosedive.

you are delusional... not much else to say... one of the fastest growing per capita housing markets, one of the lowest hotel vacancy rates, one of the country's lowest unemployment rates, a record number of building permits issued. What part of transition are you missing?

Good job Hobbsie!
As we can see by the photo you are trying your hardest to keep a straight face.

Was that the sound of a spoiled puppy wanting its bowl filled up again or yet another Thunder Bay resident whining?

Sorry, but 99 % of the population doesn't attend stuff like this.

Your analogy is about right though. Except it's actually more like the hogs at the feeding trough. They constantly complain that it isn't wide enough for them to all fit in. They want more taxes from everyone ya know. Every year.

So, who's the spoiled puppies? They aren't in the picture, but they were in the room.

Your comment smells of extreme elitism. But then you are sky high.

You people ragging on the mayor have got to be glass half empty people.

3-4 new hotels starting construction, new retail companies opening and retail spaces being constructed, new medical clinics, expansion at bowater at the sawmill and paper mill, new airline arriving, ever expanding engineering, mining and resource companies, the port is seeing the highest numbers in years and all you people do is whine about how bad things are.

Our biggest problems are that our convience stores are not safe after dark.... ooooooo big deal. Yea we had a high muder rate, but the people all knew eachother. If you are scared of being murdered then take a look at who your friends are. Finally there is the drug abuse problems in this city. These are not municipal issues they are provincial problems and you should address your whining accordingly.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a population increase in 2013 instead of the trending decline of the last 12 years.

And yet city taxes are STILL climbing steadily years after year after year. Imagine commercial business wasn't "booming" like you state! People are fed up seeing these idiots waste their hard earned dollars and rightfully so.

None of these projects are completed yet so they are not fully contributing to city coffers. Once they are completed then there should be a change. Plus lets look at say toronto their average property tax is $1000 dollars higher than ours and their population density is nearly 10 times what ours is...... They are paying way more than we are for tax/person/km2.

Even Sudbury has higher taxes. Yes they have a lower rate, but they have higher average property assessments.

My issue is with the waterbills. How can my water bill be more than hydro and gas combined in the summer months.... I don't even use city water for my law. Our water bills keep going up because we keep building suburbs. Build more lake shore condos and more people will live there. I'd be willing to give up my house and move to a condo north of marina park. They just need to be reasonably priced.

Does anyone else find it funny, that the OLG ( Ontario Lottery and Gaming) is a major sponsor of the Sate of City Address, put on by the Chamber of Commerce?

After all, we have heard from local businesses, that the Casino has been a drain on the local economy!

Does City Council and the Chmaber "bow down" to th OLG?

Just wondering.

Nosedive...wow. Trying to drive this city forward into the new century whilst the cane shaking losers of this city constantly trying to stop change. I guess you can't please everyone, at least they can shake their cane on tbnewswatch where their opinion "matters".

Bigtime: although I don't use a cane, I believe, by your comment that I would be older that you. Judging by your tone, it was along time since I was 15 or 16 years old. Not everything shiny and new is good for you. "I want, I want", comes with a cost you may not yet, understand.. Setting priorities maybe another. But it's nice to Read your comment and as you see, it does matter.

Bigtime says:
Actually, yes I do fully understand, 46 years of age as a taxpayer, and homeowner. The cane shaking remark is in regards to armchair politicians such as yourself who constantly voice the silliest of concerns "Im a taxpayer, me me me me me me". And no, the comments do not matter at all actually, negativity runs deep on this site via the comments section here and Im glad you and others feel better when you vent about it slamming your fingers onto the keyboard on tbnewswatch. Keep up your useless concerns and rants though, they are usualyl good enough for the smallest of chuckles. Oh, there I go acting 16 again right?

You never see any comments on the good news stories because most users of this site are depressed and can't see the bright side of life.

Thunder Bay is doing better than some other places in this country and will only grow when the mining sector gets rolling.

I am with you, Conker. Attending that speech this morning with 200 like-minded people was exhilarating to say the least! Thunder Bay is moving forward and it is going to be fun to be along for the journey.

They need to look into the minning aspects! Is there truth to the dozen of new mines? Look deeper, Most exploration companies are begging for money right now to keep afloat. As for proposed mines I think 1 or 2 will pop up.
2/7/2013 8:35:42 AM
TBDR says:
I'd love for you to name me one mining company in this area that's begging for money to keep afloat. Out of all the proposed of developing mines, the only ones that aren't pretty much guaranteed are the ones in the ring of fire. There's a new gold mine going in near Shebandowan, a new graphite mine in development that just found North America's richest deposits of the mineral, expansion to several existing mines, and a host of major exploration digs, several of which have already found mineral deposits worth going after.

All those blue dots that surround thunder bay are mines in the environmental assessment phase (i.e. in advanced stages of planning). It costs alot of money to do an EA so they are not doing them for fun, they plan to build the mines.

DON'T ASSUME YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT

The EA is done very early, long before design never mind construction or production. It is not uncommon for projects to die in the EA stage.

Plus if you do some research you will find another 6-12 mines that are in some stage of feasibility study. Research before you comment please, you look like a fool when you pull info out of the air.
