Gravelle says as mines minister he'll make Ring of Fire a top priority

By Leith Dunick, tbnewswatch.com

Michael Gravelle said he told then Premier-elect Kathleen Wynne he’d be happy to serve in any capacity she wanted.

Deep down, however, he had to be hoping for a return to the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines.

On Monday his wish came true, when Wynne made it official, transferring the long-time cabinet minister from Natural Resources, a role he’d filled for 16 months, to Northern Development and Mines, where he served from October 2007 to October 2011.

The Ring of Fire is first and foremost on his radar screen, and Gravelle said he plans to work with newly minted Minister of Aboriginal Affairs David Zimmer to ensure proper consultations are held with First Nations to ensure development of potentially lucrative mines move ahead.

“We will be working together,” Gravelle said, reached Monday afternoon by phone in Toronto.

“I recognize that many of these developments, if not all of these developments, must show real benefits and value to the communities that are nearest by.”

While the Ring of Fire is front and centre, the Thunder Bay-Superior North MPP said it’s certainly not the only mine in play.
“There are so many other opportunities as well,” he said.

A supporter of Sandra Pupatello in the leadership race, Gravelle wasn’t hurt by that when Wynne chose her 27-member cabinet, a group that includes nine newcomers in key roles, including Liz Sanders as the new minister of education.

“I believe we have a nice mix of new ministers,” Gravelle said, asked if Wynne had chosen wisely.

It’s a refreshed, revised, cabinet, he added, one that will live up to the newly anointed premier’s goal of fiscal accountability and responsibility and social justice.

“I think it’s a true renewal with real experience,” he said.

Gravelle said he’s excited to take part in a northern cabinet committee promised by the premier, the details of which he promised were coming soon.

He’s also pleased Wynne wants to build a northern cabinet committee.

Among his other priorities are strengthening the Northern Ontario Growth Plan, the Northern Ontario Policy Institute, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation and the northern highway plan.

Gravelle also commented on Wynne’s decision not to include Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Bill Mauro in her cabinet, despite 10 years service at Queen’s Park.

“I feel badly for him because I know he was really keen to take on that role,” Gravelle said, adding he was in no position to question Wynne’s decision.

I thought that mikie was pleased in his appointment to the minister of Natural Resources. At least thats what he said at the time.

I guess what he really means is that he's happy to be minister of whatever. As long as he has the title of minister, it really doesnt matter.

Look, there's something to admire about mikie, he's a survivor. He's lived through more challenges and changed colours so many times, you'd swear he was transparent or made of teflon. He strongly supported Pupatello, but is thrilled to be part of the Wynne cabinet. Go figure.

Billie, on the other hand, just goes with the flow and agrees with whatever comes out of queens park in order to get his paycheque. What a sorry excuse of an MPP. No wonder he was left behind.

If by whatever chance the lieberals are voted out, and if billie manages to hang on, what will he do in opposition. Nothing, is my guess.

What choice does he have other then to be thrilled to be a part of Wynnes cabinet you bozo? He supported Pupatello, and she lost. He never said he had any problems with Wynne, and she won. Do you expect him as a minister to voice his displeasure with that? Come on now. #noclue, #getalife, #newtopoliticsanddoesnotknowanything

Well this time next year, Mikie will be thrilled to be the voice in oppostion of anything that he can, and Billie will be thrilled to just be re-elected.

The point is, that these 2 clowns just utter the words that their masters want. The scripts are written for them. You can say what you want, but they're puppets on a string being tossed around in Toronto.

Wynne is going to need every seat she can for the next election, including the two bootlickers from TBay.

If you've ever worked for government at a significant level, you would understand. Other than that, just tune into whatever you're being fed.

YQT, I could not disagree more. I am always puzzled at how Gravelle gets a free ride in our city. Think about the issues that make people angry. The gas plant, closing the plants initially, Wind Farms, Energy Prices, The recent spat with Teachers. Gravelle was in cabinet for every one of them. Why wouldn't one media person ask him why he went to war with the teachers. Or why the gov't was going to close these coal plants. Not his riding, but his city has one. It was going to be converted, but then the gov't hit the pause button. Mike was in cabinet. What has Mike done to fix it.

Mike gives those feel good about everything answers but he never gets pinned down for being around the big table when the bad stuff goes down.

As for Mr. Mauro, I like the guy. You clearly do not. You seem fixated on him and only you know the real reason. I think he has done a great job, you do not. That's our opinion, but he has brought a ton to his riding for a guy not sitting around the big table.

An interesting twist. Is it fair to ask Mike why the Ontario gov't stopped the conversion of our coal plant. Every decision in the last few years that has bothered our region, he has been in cabinet and now he is back in. What are the answers

What both of you don't get is that both Bill and Mick don't have the power to change anything you are talking about. Until this region is putting huge dollars into the provincial coffers nobody down south cares and the politicians care even less because we are only what 5 seats from sudbury to manitoba boarder. We have no influence on who makes up the government.

The only way we will get treated like a southern ontario city is when we get the mines open and produce cash though taxes. The government wants to have more money so they can build their pet projects or payoff whomever they need to (cough cough ..Hudak). The only way to get more money out of the north is to have more people living and working here. So they will help the mines out to get started to create more tax revenue, then to attract workers they will give us some projects that will cost less than what we will generate. I bet the day the mines get digging will be the day the multiplex gets funded.

AAaaaahhh...now I see why the poor are treated like dirt here, no money to buy any respect. The hockey rink/construction company monopoly is pushing the poor out the back door. You've really enlightened me.
