The Executive Director of the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society, is stepping down.

Maryann Kleynendorst has accepted another job offer in the city. During her 20 months at the helm, the organization made it through some of its most difficult times.

The Humane Society is now financially stable and able to meet all of its obligations and commitments.

Adoption rates have been significantly increased and average length of stay for animals has been cut by 90 per cent. Kleynedorst says she's proud of what's been accomplished in her two years with the society.

Kleynendorst  will continue to work with the organization as a member of the board of directors.

Well, the humane society seems to be in much better shape now compared to during the Christmas they were desperately asking for donations. I'd say her time spent there was a success.

Thanks to this woman for her commitment to her position and these animals entrusted to the TBDHS.
It's been a tough couple years for Humane society.
We need to have more reasonably priced spay-neuter programs in the City to reduce the number of unwanted animals who meet premature ends due to no homes.

Maryann was doing what she was hired to do. She is a self-employed management consultant (Management Solutions) hired to get them out of the hole they had dug themselves in to. She accomplished that goal fantastically and is now moving on. The "executive director" facade was a bit much but maybe necessary to get around using donated monies to pay for her services, I don't know.

She saved them this time but what happens now? Shelter mismanagement (due in part to an inefficient board of directors), lack of transparency and a lack of cooperation with the public and other animal welfare groups were significant factors contributing to their downfall over the past decade. If they cannot find suitable management and do not correct the mistakes they made in the past, history will repeat itself. They're not off to a good start this year having to already cancel a major fundraiser (the "Fur Ball") due to a lack of interest.
