Cyclotron finds a home

The cyclotron finally has a home.

It will be part of the new Health Services Centre being built next to the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute on Oliver Road.
The $10 million plan for the TBRRI to produce its own isotopes for medical diagnoses and research for the city and beyond was supposed to have started last spring. But design and site planning delayed the project. The TBRRI analyzed several options on whether to build a stand - alone facility.

Ultimately it decided to include the project within the Health Services Centre, which will save more than $1 million.

Now I am sure that the Liberals, or Mauro or Gravelle had nothing to do with this little announcement right?

C'mon YQT, tell us all why this is bad news too. After all, there they go spending money again, this time on health care. Mauro and Gravelle should be yelling down at Queen's Park,

"forget about that medical stuff, save that money".

Yeap YQT---- let's hear your spin on this article next.

uhhh... you do realize a post like this pretty much invites ridicule right? I'm neither agreeing nor disagreeing with you. Just pointing that out.

tbdr thanks but i know, but i as so tired of yqt and his constant bashing of mauro and the liberals. they have done nothing right in 9years and everything wrong in his world despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary for this region.

sometimes i just can't help myself. lol

@ lori

How right you are that"that the Liberals, or Mauro or Gravelle had nothing to do with this little announcement right?"

We have to thank the beneficence of our federal government for provincial welfare.

Federal Support to Ontario

In 2013–14, the Government of Ontario will receive $19.9 billion through major transfers (Canada Health Transfer and Canada Social Transfer) – an increase of $9 billion from 2005–06.

In 2012–13, the Government of Ontario received $19.2 billion in major transfers, accounting for about 17 per cent of its revenues in that year.

Thanks to the federal government for paying for the cyclotron.

Don't know why the city had to contribute what was it $1.5 million for something that is not in their jurisdiction though.

lori.. I am sure you are a fine citizen but you are not even close on this one... The Libs have nothing to do with this announcement.. and in FACT if you did your homework.. The majority of this money came from the FEDS then the province and the city...
At city council back in January TBRRI announced that that the Cyclotron was being built at this facility....
no Politics here.. just good sound fiscal judgemet.. Yet typical TBay.. .... there is a conspiracy ... Please people.. Good things happen in Tbay ... its not always conspiracy... The good people at TBRHSC and TBRRI are managing this project.. let them do it and as Mr. Potts says.. let them do it fiscally responsible1

me to, Tired.

Chezhank. How exactly did this FED money that went to the province, make its way to Thunder Bay and not Toronto, Windsor, Ottawa. Oh yeah. Let's forget about the Billions the province has brought here through our two MPP's. Tired--- I am more than willing to accept your posting at face value. My point wasn't so much the pat on the back as it was the constant complaining that people like YQT do about this gov't that has done so much for this city and region and this hospital. Cardiac, Extra MRI, PEt Scanner and tons more. I too am tired of the expert critics, who always know why something is wrong. Gravelle and Mauro have done a remarkable job. Not alone. No one ever does, but they have done great things here, far better than anyone in 50 years. So on this issue, I am not sure how the process goes FED's Province, City, but nice to see the Fed's stepped up to the plate. It is a rare but welcome occurrence but the province normally leads the way on funding around here

Maybe cuz Toronto,Ottawa ,Hamilton already gots one of them things and there is not enough demand to ride a cyclotron there to put in another one, so we gets one.
2/17/2013 2:26:46 PM
Cletus Van Damme says:
The real issue here is that a cyclotron, a machine that causes charged particles to accelerate in static magnetic field could accidentally create a black hole and ultimately a tear in the very fabric of reality.

This device should not be allowed anywhere near the city limits.

Let's put it in Neebing, no one would even notice a black hole their.

I speak in the same terms about Gravelle and Mauro. Mauro is my MPP, but Gravelle has done just as much. But I accept that others have a different view point. I accept that not everyone agrees with everything they have done. Thats politics and that's life. I don't accept the constant criticism on this site. So someone, anyone, tell me what politician, from what party has brought more to our region than BOTH of these guys. Can chezhank, yqt, tsb. can anyone answer that one little question. so if they are not good, if they haven't done a good job for our region, then it should be easy to say who has been better. you critics always want to complain. Tell me who has been better for the north, or what gov't was better for the north in the past 50 years. should be easy for you Einsteins. but you won't because you can't. It is so much fun watching you people complain and complain but never have an answer to such a simple question.

@Lori
When I give a petition to my mpp I expect that she present it in the legslature. Our spineless mpp did not so we get HST...yes Lori more tax.
Our mpp brought us wind turbines when they were parliamentary secretary for the green energy act,but never thought to exclude them in certain areas. And of course our mpp gave us a health care premium that is not a tax.
Yes our mpp did do this for us while running a deficit that brings our provincial debt to levels that are Greek to me.
2/18/2013 7:44:55 AM
lori says:
Yes, cause when the great Henry brings a petition, the lowly MPP must do what his bidding. How idiotic can you be. Your petition was going to stop it. Nice EGO. Our MPP brought us wind turbines--- no, your city council brought you turbines, on city property, with a contract signed by the city where Horizon pays the city rent. Don't let those facts confuse you Hank. As for Greece you sound like YQT. Ontario is no where near that, but, why no comment about Canada and the enormous debt of our country and the mismanagement by Harper, or does that reality not fit with your politics. Feel free like YQT to criticize the Liberals, but then include the conservatives and most gov'ts around the globe running deficits. Harris did it during a huge boom. McGuinty did it during a world wide recession. I think there is a difference. Feel free to disagree but then you disagree with the world so that won't be anything new. All we need is a story about our MPP and cops. That will really get you going
2/18/2013 8:16:05 PM
yqtyqt says:
This article has nothing to do with the federal conservatives. If you want to target them under an appropriate article, then knock yourself out.

But when you do, remember that you have stated that you supported the current federal gov't.

Be consistent, other than your constant criticism of those who oppose the provincial Lieberals.
2/19/2013 1:30:55 PM
chezhank says:
-An mpp is supposed to represent the lowly constituent but it would require an mpp to stand up for their constituents and that requires a backbone. He did not have to sign on to the petition.
The fact that mpp Mauro was on the Standing Committee of General Government that helped draft Bill 150 the Green Energy Act which took powers away from municipalities to oppose such projects was the city's fault, surely you are confused!
-If the federal government did not have to bail out Ontario they could have reduced their deficit.
-Look at the good news about our mp and cops, even the federal government knows that it was a waste of money to fund the cop recruitment program, and it is being cancelled,as it realized it was funding a bigger gang, bigger than the cosa nostra asking for protection money!
-However I will give McGuinty praise when in his finest hour he froze teachers wages. He finally came to his senses but quit.

trevor99 says:
I will stay out of the insulting debates but Chezhank you are mistaken. The green energy act took away the ability of Neebing to oppose the wind farms, not the City of Thunder Bay because Neebing is where the wind farms would be located. It was still the city of Thunder Bay who agreed to this nightmare and caused the entire mess. I live out here and I know you are blaming the wrong person. I blame the past city council

As for representing a constituent, let me ask a question.

If you go to your MPP and make a request is it your position that he must follow through. What if your request conflicts with the position of another constituent. Who wins?

Your position mistakenly assumes that your MPP is for you. He is for me and for those people who do not agree with you or me.

He might have had a 1000 people on the opposite side of your issue. Does he ignore them. I think you need to reconsider your viewpoint.
2/20/2013 10:56:01 AM
chezhank says:
@trevor99
Because of the green energy act, Neebing is not allowed to say no to the wind farm.If the green energy act was not enacted the land owner could have his desire to build wind farms opposed. So yes Thunder Bay city council agreed to a lease, but it would have been fruitless if there was no green energy act and Neebing did not allow it.
As for representing a constituent,I was not the only signatory, and nothing prevented the 1000 people who agreed with the HST from presenting their own petition in support of the HST.Instead we get taxation without representation!

Cletus: what a misinformed comment... Starting to scare people with dumb ass comments is just not right.

Cyclotrons are extremely safe and if you know anything about radioistopes.. They save lives! by allowing doctors to diagnose and treat early.
They will also replace having to get our material from a Nuclear reactor.. Every hear of Chaulk river

lori says:
yqt, you preach to me about postings. You insult our MPPs at every turn. Yes I voted for Harper does that mean I cannot criticize the lack of support we get from that gov't. Does it mean I rebut your tirades about Liberal economics, showing that the Conservatives deficits and debt management are no better and sometimes worse. This is a health care story. Health care is a provincial issue. The critics rant about how bad the gov't is, but never about the incredible good they have done in many ways. So forgive me if I don't go along with your view of the planet. I can disagree with the Liberals over deficits but acknowledge that it has benefited our region. You have criticized no one but the Liberals for things other gov'ts have done. It is that hypocricy that I normally commment on. I didn't realize that besides being an expert on everything wrong with the province, you are now the posting police. It is you who should review the guidelines. I insult posters, not politicians unlike you.
