Firefighters investigating morning blaze

tbnewswatch.com

THUNDER BAY -- Firefighters are investigating the cause of a massive fire that gutted a vacant Cumming Street building.

Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue responded to a call about a fire at 145 Cumming Street near the corner of McKenzie Street around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Fire and Rescue officials say when they arrived flames were visible from the ground floor of the two-storey building to the roof line of the northeast corner. Firefighters attacked the fire but officials say the situation quickly deteriorated with the entire building soon becoming fully engulfed.

It’s believed that the building was vacant as it had plywood covering the windows and entrances.

By 11 a.m. fire trucks were still spraying the building with water. The building itself was covered in ice.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers were also at the scene and blocked off both entrances to Cumming Street from Memorial Avenue and Simpson Street.

The investigation is ongoing.

The building has been vacant since the last fire over a year ago, but the boarding wasn't very secure. I have seen evidence of people having entered the building on several walks past it over the past year. It was only a matter of time before this happened.

I am pretty sure the city owns it, I don't know why they don't remove hazards like this.

Urban renewal, Baie de Tonnaire-style. Just like I predicted, just last week. Don't try to blame it on me.

God forbid they remove the ice and slush that accumulated from putting out the fire. That would COST MONEY!! Why even put it out at all? Let it burn all the other houses and those people's insurance can handle it, instead of my precious tax dollars!!

If the fire wasn't extinguished and allowed to burn other homes freely, then it would cost the city dearly with insurance company lawsuits for failing to prevent it from spreading. Kudos to the fire service for putting out another preventable fire!

I was being sarcastic, but thank you for the logical explanation for any readers who might misunderstand. :)

I felt as though tsb's comment was sufficiently sarcastic/satirical enough for people to notice, but...tsb was really being sarcastic here, Tbaynorth. All the same, good work by the fire department for their hard work.

Another pointless, ignorant comment... I bet you grin when that same grader is out at 1 am tonight plowing the streets clean while you lay in bed and annoy your wife with your snorring so you can get out and drive the streets freely tomorrow morning though right ??

Why did we even bother sending fire fighters there. Snow is just frozen water and at some point it will encounter snow and put the fire out.

If not spring will come soon enough and that's bound to bring some rain.

I am shocked that not one person thought about the other homes around there and if the fire spread to them, perhaps lives would be lost? I thought about it first!..Of course they had to put it out!

In the first comment on here, which I made, I bemoaned the fact that the city isn't demolishing these abandoned structures to improve community safety...
