THUNDER BAY -- A man is dead following a highway crash Wednesday afternoon.

Officers with the Thunder Bay detachment of the OPP closed the Highway 11/17 extension at Mapleward Road following what was originally described as a “serious motor vehicle collision.”

The two-vehicle collision took place shortly after 2:15 p.m..

OPP spokeswoman Const. Diana Cole said the victim died at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre from injuries sustained following the crash.

Cole said 72-year-old James Gray was driving an SUV and heading northbound on Mapleward when he began to cross at the intersection and came into collision with a pickup truck heading west. The collision took place in the westbound lane of the highway.

The driver of the truck was also brought to the hospital and treated for non life-threatening injuries. Neither vehicle had passengers at the time of the crash.

Police say Highway 11/17 west on Arthur Street to Highway 130 can be used as a detour if it is available.

Cole said the highway would likely remain closed for several hours as investigators continued their investigation at the scene.
