Administration is looking at how much it's going to cost to repair all three of the city's outdoor pools.

Council had asked administration to look at placing the repairs for Heath Park Pool into the 2013 budget. The repairs are estimated to cost about $250,000. Administrating asked council to hold off on placing the repairs into this year’s budget until an updated assessment could be made.

The assessment will include the condition of the city’s three outdoor pools and identify any other problems.

Michael Smith, general manager for the city’s facilities, fleet and transit services, said once they know how much work is needed to fix the pools then they will add it to the 2014 budget.

“We anticipate the pools will be up and operational as normal,” Smith said. “We would continue to do the day-to-day maintenance as required to keep them operational for the public. The pools are aged. We’re anticipating that it is probably going to be a $500,000 range for repairs based on early assessments.”

Smith said they haven’t ruled out any options yet including possibly closing down the pools but added that’s not something they anticipate.

A report on all three pools is expected in June.

These pools are utilized by many children and families in different areas of our city. Have any organizations or property owners pay their taxes (B&G Club)that only cater to a certain geography and put the money towards the pools.

Nice to see the pools are going to be repaired. I'd gladly have my taxes raised if I know kids are going to have fun and cool off in the summer

When I was 8 they said they were going to start charging 25 cents to get into the pool. I along with every other kid in Westfort went straight to city hall and protested (still have the picture from the paper). I don't even live in Westfort anymore or around any of the pools but I would be devastated if any of them closed and would probably be right there at city hall again protesting. These pools are old and need work but they are a part of our community and should always be maintained and free for the kids in the areas to use. Glad to see that the city is still wanting to keep these pools nice and free.

Dease, Widnall and Heath are always packed in the summer. Keeping them open is decision I agree with.

Thunder Bay is spoiled with an abundance of natural fresh water lakes, including the biggest in the WORLD at its shore. Want to cool down in the summer? Jump in a LAKE, its also FREE!

I live right next to Heath pool and as soon as summer roles around there are children and families everywhere enjoying it. I have no problem having my taxes go to something that provides families and children with free entertainment and a positive diversion from less desirable activities. Maintaining our community parks and services such as ice rinks and golf courses is a vital part of what holds are town together and makes Thunder Bay a city where you can feel great raising your children.

I don't know how "fresh" the water is around here, but the lakes that are easier to access through public transportation are often closed for much of the summer. Would rather see the kids in the pools than Boulevard or Chippewa.
