Rail or road: First Nation chief wants Ring of Fire to connect his community

The debate to develop an all-weather road or a railway into the Ring of Fire doesn’t have the chief of Marten Falls First Nation worried.

Chief Eli Moonias and many other Matawa First Nation chiefs met with premier Kathleen Wynne in Toronto to discuss the Ring of Fire project. Minister of Northern Development and Mines Michael Gravelle and Minister of Aboriginal Affairs David Zimmer also attended the meeting.

A recently released study favoured a railroad into the massive chromite deposit in the lower James Bay area instead of an all-weather access road.

While rail would be a more significant initial investment, the study concluded it would be the cheaper long-term solution for shipping materials.

Moonias said it didn’t matter which one is built as long as there were access roads for the First Nation communities to use.

“If they put in a railway I think we will be approaching it in the manner that we would be involved with it,” he said.

“If they are putting in the railway, we want to be assured that access roads will be built so we can get out of this isolation.”

He said the meeting went well but believes the first step the newly appointed premier should take is implementing the memorandum of understand.

He added that he also wants to see First Nation communities involved in the construction of the roads.

Gravelle said Wynne understands the importance of having a relationship with First Nations and the Metis people. He said she wanted to have an opportunity to be able to listen to what they had to say.

“We know there needs to be discussions related to resource revenue sharing,” he said.

“As well as environmental monitoring, infrastructure development and community supports, it was an honour for me to be a part of that meeting and I certainly don’t want to be speaking on behalf of any of the Matawa First Nations chiefs. But if you speak to them I’m sure you will hear that they would say this was a really great meeting and opportunity as well.”

Here we go again.Did they not see yesterdays news where mining companies are getting tired of fighting to do business in Ontario and are moving to California.Pretty soon there will be no resources to share.

Wasn't this the same chief that only a couple months ago was in the local paper proudly showing off his gifts and talking of his dream trip overseas that the mining company has given him. The best part of the article was where he was quoted as saying that he was supportive as long as the company kept his attention.

No matter what is printed about FN people at least 6 or 7 of you have to come out from whatever rock you have been hiding under and just bash whatever is being said ..I am so tired of coming on this page and seeing these unfair remarks about FN people. It seems though that my responses must be offensive to non aboriginal people or we are not allowed to stand up for our people in the media comments anymore cause my responses never get printed. I can't even believe some of the uninformed comments you people write in here...first of all Attiwapiskat got help from where ?? Debeers floods the reserve and then sends prefab trailers for people to live in and don't clean up the mess, they are extracting trillions of dollars out of their land why shouldn't they fight for it? And another one looking for a free ride huh...yeah because living on reserve with no work is everyone's dream, this country has oppressed our people from the start and we're fighting back and you all don't like it.

Odds are they will do their best to ensure as little input is given as possible. In the past First Nations have blockaded roads, air strips and railways that were on their land.

If I was one of the companies doing this, I would go as far out of my way to ensure that this would not happen to my huge investment. Attiwapiskat has shown that no matter how much help you give the community, there will always be those that will cut off their nose in spite of their face.

Until the leaders can get together and actually agree on this, and stop having a "who is the bigger man" contest, avoid it all together. And stop bribing the chiefs with gifts. It may be a "traditional" means of dealing with things, but this is the 21st century. If they were not native, it would be bribery.
