The snow may still be on the ground, but the Ministry of Natural Resources is already preparing for the upcoming forest fire season.

The official forest fire season begins on April 1, but last year there were already fires reported by this time. So far this year there has been no premature fire activity.

MNR Fire information officer Heather Pridham says staffing and training is still a top priority.

“We’re Getting our staffing levels organized and figuring out how many fire rangers we’ll need to hire,” Pridham said during an interview with CKPR Radio. “We’re finding out who is coming back and who is not.”

Pridham says people interested in becoming Fire Rangers this season should contact the ministry.
