Challenges ahead

A local bishop says he’s praying the recently elected pope has the stamina to meet the challenges facing the Catholic church.

Millions watched as the Roman Catholic Church named cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina as the new pope. White smoke signaling that a new pope had been chosen came out of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican shortly after 7 p.m. local time in Rome.

National media have reported he will take on the name of Pope Francis I.

The 76-year-old was the runner-up to former pope Benedict XVI, who was elected in 2005 but stepped down because of health reasons.

Bergoglio is the first cardinal to be elected outside of Europe.

Thunder Bay bishop Frederick Colli had hoped for Marc Ouellet from Quebec to be the next leader of the estimated 1.2 billion people who consider themselves to be Catholic. But he said he was still overjoyed that the church has a new pope.

“Anyone elected pope will have challenges,” he said.

“I know pope Benedict saw that and his health was failing so it was necessary for a new man to take over who has some vibrancy. I don’t know Bergoglio but I hope he has the stamina and I’m sure he has the wisdom and holiness to move the church forward.

“I’m looking forward to working with him and pledging my support to him and seeing what direction he gives to the Catholic church over the next few years. He’s got some very important responsibilities and issues to deal with church. He’s going to have to deal with the sexual abuse issue.”

Colli said he’s heard that Bergoglio is very holy, a devoted pastor and very humble.

While interest varied, many local residents had opinions to share about the breaking news.

Peter Gernat, a Roman Catholic, said he hopes the new pope takes the church in a new direction and deals with major issues such as abuse.

Meanwhile Gord, another resident who didn’t want to give his last name when approached by a tbnewswatch.com reporter Wednesday afternoon, said he hoped the new pope stays longer than the last one. But, he added, for the most part didn’t care too much that one was chosen.

“I’m just glad it’s over with,” he said.

Ernie Epp said it was interesting that Bergoglio was from South American.

“For them to turn to someone outside of Europe is significant during a time when the Catholic Church is growing,” he said. “For them to turn to Argentina instead of Brazil for example is an interesting choice.”

He also found it interesting that he picked the name Francis and wondered how Bergoglio handled the situation in Argentina during the many military conflicts the country has faced. Overall, Epp said he looked forward to learning more about the new pope.

“We wait with interest,” he said. “The Roman Catholic church faces many challenges. All churches do. I’m a United churchman and we recognize the challenges with the church. We shall see.”

Phillip Thibodeau was also happy to hear the news and added that he was surprised to hear the cardinals had picked someone already.

“I’m shocked,” he said. “I was watching the news this morning and there was still black smoke. I didn’t really have any close pick on anyone just as long as they have someone who’s true to the people.”

Another real smart choice, pick someone at 76 years of age who dropped out of the last running because of health reasons. Also at his age, do you think there be any real change, same bad stuff will continue to happen.

Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio certainly represents a change in the Church's papal face. Humble, connected to the common folk, open, and apparently without issues.
The world can only hope that he will restore confidence in the Catholic Church and all that it stands for in this world. Perhaps a good first step would be to assess the lifestyle of the Church's clergy from the Pope on down to its local priests and adjust the how the wealth is distributed.

The world can hope....or just Roman Catholics can hope? No offence really, but this means nothing to most non-catholics.

"Cardinal Bergoglio, to be known now as Pope Francis I, is very much seen as a voice of conscience, a champion of social justice in his home country.
He in fact gave up the opportunity to live in the Archbishop's palace in Buenos Aires and chose to live in a simple apartment and cook his own meals.
"His lifestyle is sober and austere. That's the way he lives. He travels on the underground, the bus, when he goes to Rome he flies economy class.""
Viva el Papa!

fan: You obviously have not done any research. "humble, connected to the common folk, and apparently without issues" REALLY?? You should put down your Archie comics!! He is completely anti-gay marriage and anti-abortion. NO regard for the issues in the real world. I am SO thankful I am not part of organized religion because what a mistake. WOW real openminded leader there! Let's just suck us all back into the 1800's.

Those issues you mention are not new ones. They go back to a time long, long ago. The CHurch has already spoken on them and taken a position. Just because you and a disturbing number of individuals support those issues it's no reason for the Pope and the Catholic Church to as well.

By the way, not too many people are buying those Archie comics anymore either since they adopted a gay character.

So in summation, its your issues that are sucking the world back into the past. Not the Church. Time for open minds to learn what the previously opened ones did.

Translation: My dogma is more important than your freedom. The book people who think like us wrote says we're right.

Which is more disturbing? The ones advocating for equal rights and security of the person, or the pseudo-fascists saying that because they disagree, those freedoms should not be allowed?

equal rights or special rights? we already have equal rights.

we all have the same freedom. marriage is a sacriment of the church, dont like it? dont support the church, they dont want you either.

Thor Odinson says:
Marriage is a sacrEment of the Church only according to the Church. Before the Church (and then only fully usurped through fear tactics by the Church in the Middle Ages), it was a largely family function or otherwise kept between two individuals, as well as a legal contract. And that's all it concerns. Two individuals. Two individuals who may or may not follow your beliefs.

If your God is so real, let him sort it all out. By all accounts he kinda likes doing that. You've no place judging others. I do believe that Jesus fellow made a statement to that effect. He and I don't always see eye to eye, but in this case I agree with him.

Um - no. He stepped down amid a crisis in the church brought on by their inability and unwillingness to deal with priests who continue to sexually abuse those vulnerable to persons in power.

That and the church's ongoing inability to modernize the doctrine.

I expected better journalism here.

Really? Don't we enjoy freedom of speech in Canada? This is a current event that is all over the news, and you are saying we can't comment on it? Do you go around to coffee shops and "shush" non-catholics who are talking about the new pope?

I may not agree with all the comments here, but that doesn't mean people shouldn't be able to speak their minds.

Dear new Pope. considering past sexual assaults by some clergy ... remember ... sexual assault is RAPE ... there should be ZERO tolerance ... any offender should immediately be turfed and handed over to the authorities ... any thing less than ZERO tolerance is unforgiveable!!!!

Interesting take by our local Bishop.
Considering that Ouellet's brother has sex abuse convictions so I think the thought of him ever being Pope was a far fetched idea.

If this new pope strives to follow and preach the word of God to this fallen world, he will need to take a stand on issues such as those that have been mentioned that may not please everyone.
Pray that The Lord uses him to do His will.

I was raised and confirmed RC. As an adult I belive less in what the bible teaches in terms of jesus being the son of god. That being said I can not deny because of life experiance that a higher power exists even if its within the confinds of our sub level brain wave activity.

All that being said I still belive the church teaches us to help our fellow man and that is a lesson worth teaching.

Math and science will never be able to define in any reasonable probability how I asked for and recieved a miricle which manifested itself in physical form.

not even close dude.

my miricle

my wife at the time was pregnant and she confessed infedelity to me within days of becoming pregnant.

While walking trying to clear my head I had a one sided conversation with my higher power.

Long story short I asked for my childs head to be marked so I knew he was mine. he was born with a bald spot the size of a nickel on the dead center of the back of his head that will never grow hair.

However,I am guilty of using science to confirm he is my son.

I have called the 8 ball off the break in pool and sunk it: that is a fluke.

I don't suggest to you to change your view or even belive me I however I know because I have witnessed.

He may very well have been born with the mark without me asking but in all reasonable probabilty what are the odds of me asking that question and him being born with that mark.
