Fare hike: cost of riding city transit going up April 1

By Leith Dunick, tbnewswatch.com
Brake Repairs! Front Ends! Mufflers! Shocks! Not just mufflers - MINUTE MUFFLER, 677 Memorial Avenue. Open Monday-Saturday. Email: tminutemuffler@shaw.caClick here for details.

The cost of riding City Transit buses is going up on April 1.

City officials on Monday announced a single-fare ride will increase five cents, to $2.65, when the new rates kick in next month.
Jon Hendel, Transit’s planning and marketing analysis, said the increases were necessary to cover inflationary increases and were approved in the city’s 2013 annual operating budget.

“Some fares have increased, some fares see a reduction, based on the new fare table.”

Hagi Transit customers will see the most noticeable drop in price for a single ride, with fares lowered to match those of Thunder Bay Transit, which was mandated through the province’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disability Act.

Equal fares make it easier for families to share ticket books, he added, estimating the cost to ride Hagi Transit prior to Jan. 1 was between $3.50 and $4.

“All Thunder Bay Transit fares are open to specialized riders, as well as to conventionalized riders,” Hendel said. “So that’s for the big bus and the Hagi bus.”

Twenty-ride passes are climbing $5, to $40, while a book of 10 tickets will increase from $20 to $24, a 20 per cent jump. Family day passes are going up a whopping 75 per cent, to $10.50.

The family passes, which have been growing in popularity, especially among visitors to Thunder Bay, haven’t gone up since they were initially introduced a decade ago.

It’s still a good deal, Hendel said.

“It’s unlimited travel for one adult and two children, or two adults and three children,” he said. “With the new transit fare table, it basically creates a standard of increase across the fares. With the recent adoption of the new fare table through the transit master plan, all the fares have been put into place so they are now balanced across the province.”

Monthly discount passes are up 6.7 per cent to $63.50. They were $59.50.

The city-run organization is also introducing a senior and youth monthly pass, which will cost $53. It is not presently available.

“Through the transit master plan process we’ve heard very loudly from the senior community as well as the youth community, looking for a fare for them. Obviously with the aging community, this will definitely benefit the community,” Hendel said.

Transit has dropped the age to qualify for senior rates from 65 to 60. Youth rates apply to children between the ages of six and 18.

Hendel said transit-fare increases are necessary and riders should expect them to be implemented on an annual or biennial basis going forward.

totally unacceptable... bus fares keep increasing but the service isn't getting any better.... Heck we don't even have a second bus terminal.

Yes we do The City "Bus" Hall. Just as good as those bike lanes.

Well it sure does not pay to need to use the bus in this city. The services is slow, expensive, and you might get mugged while waiting for the bus. The way to get more people to ride the bus is to bring the price down. Or is this some secret plan by the city to get people to use their failure bike lanes?

James Gang says:
The way to get more people to ride the bus is to lower the fare?

Who appointed you to make people ride the bus? Who says that more people ride the bus? Why are you trying to tell people how they should use transportation methods?

The bus should exist only to service the needs of the riders. It is not there to socially engineer the public into forms of transportation that some bureaucrat thinks is a great idea, or creates an artifical demand for their own job.

The bus must be financially sustainable and operate of the backs of those who use it. If its not cost effective for the riders, then they will get a bike, walk, or grow up and buy a vehicle. What's wrong with that? Why should those of us who buy vehicles and secure our own means of transportation pay for those who don't?

Im tired of working hard to pay for everything for those who dont. If you work hard and ride the bus, good for you, but its time to pay your own way. Raise the rates NOW.

passlake says:
grow up and buy a vehicle? how disconnected are you?

And.. if you must know.. people without vehicles (eg. those that haven't "grown up" and rely on other forms of transportation) that contribute to our tax base through renting or owning property pay for the roads they don't use. So, they ALSO pay for stuff they don't use.. just like you.

I agree, and like to add that some people are so blinded by their privilege that they do not even realize, that many people do not have the luxury of owning a vehicle for a variety of different reasons.

I would be embarrassed to be that ignorant!

Sprague Street Superman says:
Privilege?? People are not privileged to own a vehicle, they earn it. A person owns a vehicle because they work hard, make sacrifices and tough decisions as well as keep their priorities straight. They don not rely on the hard work of other people to subsidize their way across town.

You're right. Some people are so blinded by their greed that they think other people should make up for their own shortcomings.

Buying a vehicle, maintaining it, and operating it is what responsible adults do. Demanding the public pay for your transportation requirements is not.

really? i don't drive and rarely take the bus, so how come i still pay for your infrastructure? not to mention environmental costs from fossil fuels.
hmm, then car drivers complain about bike lanes. well, too bad, cyclists pay for the roads as well, and don't wear them out as fast either.
so, superman, considering that i have paid for roads and such all my adult life, and never had a drivers' license, i want affordable transit or i want my tax monies back!

Tim H. says:
Bus fare should rise until it sustains the transit system. When the users learn to respect the service they are provided with maybe they will start treating the buses and the people that use them appropriately.

How quick will there be calls for the overpaid union drivers to be replaced with people whose wage should reflect the job requirements?
3/18/2013 11:20:10 AM
fastball says:
Yes - because, by God, we want minimum wage people driving a bus full of people around. We want guys making 12 dollars an hour fighting for space on our meticulously-kept street, taking on the typical brain-dead TBay driver..all the while keeping track of the occasional alcohol-fueled violent passenger.
Yup...as a guy whose kept a unionized job for the past 30 years (barely making 20 dollars an hour), I'm wondering where exactly in the Bahamas I should build my second luxury vacation home.
3/19/2013 10:33:49 AM
Tim H. says:
People that drive the bus need to be paid for the skills the job demands. No more, no less.

$12/hr should be plenty. Don't forget all their union specific perks too.

The reason they should be paid less is simple. Either bring operating costs into line, or raise the fares to pay those operating costs.

Most likely the probably solution is to do some of both.

As for your union wage that's too low for you, perhaps that's why it is so low? Your employer must operate competitively to stay in business. Your union artificially requires more money for chronic under performers and takes away from the good performers.

It only just hurts the good people that work there. If youre one of the good people, now you know why you're only making $20/hr.

I'll say a prayer for you.
3/19/2013 11:52:00 AM
fastball says:
12 dollars per hour should be enough?? Minimum wage in Ontario is $10.25. That's what the average corner store worker gets per hour. You're seriously advocating that bus drivers should get a buck and a bit more than a corner store employee? Someone who has the lives of 50 people in their hands? Man, you're tough.

PS...I wasn't complaining about my unionized wage. I merely stated that to dispel the popular notion that unionized workers are all making 35 dollars an hour, and taking 2 days a week off sick.

@$2.65 for a ride each way on the city bus now & all these new bikelanes/trails etc that the city has built/will be building, it may just seem worth it to some to invest in a good bike, a better helmet & a really GOOD LOCK, especially with the warmer weather is a coming!

Cry about it! If you don't like it walk or ride a bike. Sorry if this might make your decision to buy that extra bottle of booze or smokes a bit more difficult.

imhere says:
Not everyone who rides the bus smokes or drinks. What it will do is make life a little harder for those who work hard for their money so they can raise their children. A little harder for those who don't have a vehicle and need to put their child on a city bus to get home from school after a sports practice. A little harder for those who have just enough to buy the basics each month. It's only a little here and there but it adds up.

I wouldn't mind paying for good service, and at times it is, but I don't want to pay for the crap service it is alot of the time lately. I don't know what's been going on but the service has gone way downhill.

We all cry when gas prices go up, but we still work to pay them. I do not call upon the city taxpayers to subsidize to fill my gas tank. That's life, its hard, learn to adapt.

SomeGuy says:
Part of living in this society is we have to pay for things that you don't use.

I have no children yet I subsidize your kids education with my taxes. I'm healthy and very very rarely use our health care system yet I have to subsidize someone's hip surgery.

I haven't taken the bus since H.S. but I have to admit, this increase is absurd. To the seniors who are on a fixed income that rely on the bus....they better receive a discount and to the _____'s they better NOT receive a discount

SomeGuy says:
Youth and Senior citizens can purchase a discount pass for only $53.00 for the month compared to $74 for everyone else. This is a new pass that wasn't available, so a yes they get a pretty good discount.

This WAS presented during budget deliberation. TBNewsWatch even did an entire article about it, back in early February.

Don't expect the city to call you every time they are making a decision on something. You have a responsibility to be informed. All of this stuff is published online days ahead of council meetings so that you can respond to it, and then after something is give an approval, there is a three week window before it is given final confirmation, during which time you have another opportunity to voice an opinion.

Lastly, if you really want to be involved, run for council. You seem to think people agree with you, so why not? Don't you want to earn $28,000 a year as a councillor?

sky high says:
Whining about $2.65 for a ride? Do you people realize the actual cost per trip that comes with owning your own vehicle? The cost includes gas, maintenance, insurance, depreciation of vehicle....a lot more per km than getting a chauffeur to drive you to your destination. Less whining, more research please.

dw122679 says:
It would help if everyone riding the bus paid their fare in the first place. So many times drivers will hop off the busses when changing drivers leaving the busses unattended and people just walk on. If you have a pass at least go back and show it. Sick of people getting free rides.

Sprauge Street Superman and James Gang. I guess you two would greatly enjoy to buy your own private health insurance. Because after all, why should everyone else be paying for your insurance? Why should someone be on the hook for something they will never use because they go to the gym and don't eat fast food? You should take care of your body and treat it like a temple. If you don't, you obviously do deserve to die.

Same argument, different subject. I thought Canada was about ensuring everyone was equal and that we all had opportunities. Obviously, you two believe that only those with money should have a chance at life.

There is a place for people like you, and it's 65km to the south in a country called the United States. You are more than welcome there with your elitest attitudes.
3/18/2013 7:14:23 PM
The Wolf says:
I have no sympathy nor do I care about people who whine and complain about their cost of their choice for transportation has gone up. My own costs change daily and always go up every weekend (even more on long weekends) and have jumped over $1.00 a liter since I started to drive and I have never asked to be subsidized.

Back to the "choice" point I made above. Anyone who is riding the bus is making a choice to use that form transportation. If they find it to expensive or a bad service, well then I suggest you change your mode of transportation. There are options like walking, jogging, biking or arranging rides with coworkers or friends. Most of you complain and forget a bus system is actually a LUXURY and not the last choice method of travel.

There are several life luxuries that can be given up to help balance this small manageable increase, like 2 less double doubles a month, use matches instead of buying lighters, generic brand mac and cheese to name a few.

Soilwork says:
I actually think the bus fare should be $3.00 or even more, but they should actually provide more frequent service, that runs on time. People would use the bus if they knew they could get to where they wanted reliably, and within a reasonable amount of time. I debated one day whether to walk or take the bus to Canadian tire. I decided to start walking and catch the bus along the way. An hour later, just as I was entering the Canadian Tire parking lot, the bus went by. Why even bother waiting?

What a waste of fuel driveing around in these mostly empty big busses. They could probibly use a mini van and accomplish the same thing.

pabum says:
Riding the bus should not cost ANYTHING. If the city can afford to build fancy this and that and the marina and such, they could easily subsidize “no fare” public transit.
I have been to cities large and small, all over North America (and beyond). I can say with confidence that Thunder Bay Transit is THE WORST operated public transit system I have EVER seen. Don’t get me wrong every public transit commission has its own unique difficulties. Things change every day, sure. BUT, if you can’t get basic service, respect, and maintenance right, why should the public have to pay? I could give you a shopping list of basic service requirements for transit provision, which are NEVER met in Thunder Bay.
And that’s not even why I think it should be free: in many cities, public transit is unrestricted and costs nothing, within a certain radius of the inner city core. In others, the cost of the trip is centred on kilometers journeyed. Also, we are the ONLY city that has “transfers” that allow a traveller to not just switch bus routes, but get back on a bus after a fairly extended amount of time. That’s double the fares they could have collected all these years… but it seem nobody has figured that one out yet. Zero fare systems greatly reduce equipment costs, personnel costs, passenger aggression, wait times, etc.
3/19/2013 7:10:41 AM
pabum says:
RESPONSIBLE ADULTS WITHOUT A VEHICLE SOMETIMES NEED TRANSIT TO BE RESPONSIBLE ADULTS.
@tbay99: If someone buys booze and smokes, so what? The astronomical taxes on those items go straight to provincial government’s coffers…….to fund public services!!
@SSSuperman: There are SO many ways a person can own a vehicle without working, and as such, do have one (or more!). Maybe their parents are rich...maybe they won it...etc.etc.
@The Wolf, @jamesgang: You two could not be farther off. Your ignorance scares me. Read a book… There is a whole world outside Thunder Bay, you know. Also, I do NOT frequent Tim Horton’s, nor will I ever…and I am willing to bet that it is people like you two who are accountable for the dozens and dozens of empty discarded Tim’s cups all over the city….most of which are within 10 feet of a proper waste disposal receptacle….
Also, what happened to our electric streetcars I keep seeing pictures of? WAY more efficient and environmentally friendly than gas/diesel buses!

I ride the bus everyday... That's if it is not nice out and I decide walk to work (only takes me a half hour).
The only problem I have with this increase is that it is a weird amount... and has been for a while... how many people have extra dimes and nickels in their pockets... the increases should be rounded up by 25 cents. This will also prevent complaining for longer lengths of time. But who am I kidding, it's Thunder Bay, they will just find something new to complain about....

Just came back from Mississauga where I took public transit. It cost me $2.75 and my kid $2.75. More than Thunder Bay. Difference I saw was the bus was full in Mississauga and our buses are half to three quarters empty. We just don't have enough riders to make our transit system self sufficient. And it isn't the cost.

Tired of the critics on News Watch says:
Hey all you complainers.. I pay enough on my property tax.. right on the bill there is my contribution to transit which I dont use...
The cost of everything is going up..Ever look at the price of gas? Why should I subsidize your fare any more? Seems to me thats a pretty cheap fare to get from point A to B in a top of the line transit bus.. You would pay more in other cities....
3/19/2013 1:35:40 PM
minstrel says:
i spend about half my time in Tbay and half in Ottawa. the fare in TBay is reasonable for a city its size. also, Tbay has a fully accessible and green fleet, so by comparison is cheap for what you get.
that being said, how about subsidising it more so that we can have more ridership and less gasoline burning cars on our roads. maybe a gas tax?

I think waiting 40 mins. in the freezing cold for a bus is BS... really no way is that reasonable for the MAINLINE I dont care what you say the main routes should be every 15 mins all the time!!!!! IF you disagree go out and wait for a bus in the cold yourself NOT knowing you just missed one and are STUCK waiting for the next!!!! SO raising the rates without BETTERING the SERVICE is A JOKE!!!!!!!
3/19/2013 7:36:47 PM
The Wolf says:
So the service is a joke because you are not responsible enough to better judge time?

If you time it to be at your stop 10 mins prior to when it comes by you wont miss it and will cut your max wait time to 10-15 mins.

I agree that $2.65 is not a bad price if you are getting quality service. I totally agree with Collie that you should not have to wait 40 mins. between buses. RE the Mainline according to the schedule, leaving City Hall, bust at 6:25pm and the next bus is at 7:10pm than 7:55pm. thats disgusting espically at that time of day.
