Unfair deal?

Coun. Ken Boshcoff is calling Toronto’s special deal with Ontario’s Lottery and Gaming Corporation unfair.

The Globe and Mail reported that Toronto would not get the standard formula for hosting fees that other municipalities receive from an OLG casino, and instead would receive $50 to $100 million -- more than double what other cities receive.

Boshcoff said when Thunder Bay, Point Edward, Sault Ste Marie and Brantford negotiated deals to have casinos built in the early 2000s, they agreed to five per cent of the slot revenue.

The original agreement stated that if one city was to receive an increase then they all would.

“You can’t just favour one person in your family,” he said.

“We’re all in this together. The five per cent was agreed to by the original four mayors. When I see other cities in outrage, I can only say that they have completely valid concerns. Coming out of the blue like this is totally unfair.”

Mayor Keith Hobbs said the city receives about $2.4 million from the slot revenue each year and doesn’t get a hosting fee. He said he wanted to wait to see what happens in Toronto before reacting.

“My first impressions are that they are looking at privatization,” he said. “There’s going to be private companies coming in and running the casino. Perhaps we’ll be able to negotiate those higher rates. I kind of want to sit back and then we’ll go from there. If Toronto is getting double of what we’re getting I’m sure we’ll be fighting for double as well.”

Of course this is unfair.

Mayors from across Ontario are saying the same thing.

I'm not a fan of government run gambling. But the cash strapped Libs are putting all thier eggs in the Toronto market.

It takes a lot of money for a host community to fund a casino. From policing dollars to gambling addictions.

Whats good for Toronto is good for TBay.

But then again, Premier Wynne is supporting her Toronto friends.

I can smell an election around the corner.

what's this, YQTYQT posting something negative about the liberals. Wow, you don't see that except every day, every minute every second ad nauseum.

try this.

If this story is accurate, then T.Bay has every right to demand the same treatment. But I have to agree with the Mayor.

Slow down a second, find out all of the facts first, then do the yelling. If at the end of the day there are two different standards, let's all yell together.

Hey YQTYQt---- I hear the Liberals were at fault for the potato famine in the late 1800's and then they started WWI. You might want to start yelling about that. You have blamed them for pretty much everything else on the planet.

Didn't the Mayor run last election on the platform that he was going to play hardball with OLG to get Thunder Bay a bettter deal? One too many steak dinners for Mr. Mayor since and he forgets what he ran his election on!
Kick this cancer out of town already!

Why is it some stories are closed for discussion and others are wide open? Look around to peer online journals. They're all open for discussion. Even CBC opens it's doors to the most sensitive of topics.

I have no idea what you are talking about.... what does that have to do with the OLG.????

Why? Because some people take the opportunity of anonymity and an online forum to not just comment on an article, but to make racist comments.

The "False Accusation" story was open, I commented on it, as I'm sure lots of others did. Obviously our comments were not too politically correct and they shut it down before even posting one comment. Don't like it, but it's not my site so not much we can do...

vimeo says:
ok, that's my point. Lally, you're absolutely correct. There are a lot of intolerant people who annonomously flap their mouths without consequence.
But this forum is "semi-moderated". C'mon Tbnewswatch....you chose to offer a forum; please support it.
CNN, CBC, Even the Winnipeg Free Press moderate their stories. Yes, you do to on every forum. But pulling the forum because of a few negative comments takes away your edge. These are our comments, not yours. If it's anonymity that's the issue make it public like the Chronicle demands. I'm sure you'll get rid of the idiots and at least open it up for some serious, mature discussion. That's all we're looking for. Censorship only fuels the resentment.

Toronto is a much bigger location, with a much larger tourist base. I hope Boshcoff isn't implying that we should be receiving the same amount as Toronto from their OLG. An increase? Maybe. But a small one. And it won't be anywhere near comparable with a much larger city.
3/18/2013 6:53:22 PM
hadenough says:
So we get %5 or about 2.4 million in kick backs from OLG.

I know my math is not so great but does that mean that this government sponsored parasite sucks almost $50 million out of our community?

No wonder we have a crime problem and numerous social issues leading to poverty and crime.

OH surprise a city in Southern Ontario is getting better treatment. Surprise it's Toronto and EVERYONE is complaining. Time to leave this failure of a province and join Manitoba. We constantly get the shaft up here. Our insurance rates would drop, taxes would be spent HERE instead of in TO.

Time to leave Ontario.

If you did a little research at all, you'd find out that niagra falls is in the same situation. But so many in the north immediately turn into the poor little neglected child because they are too lazy to do any research and educate themselves. I truly wonder how many could speak intelligently about many of this articles they comment on. Based on the comments, I'm guessing it wouldn't be to many.

Who ever play's cards in these casino's with an 8 deck shoe, Don't bother. You have 27% less chance of comeing out a winner than if you were playing a 6 deck shoe, which is was in the begining. The dealers don't bust any more and there makeing there hands because of all the small cards they have added. The casino here is a money vacuum now. The sooner people who go in there learn that the better it's going to be for them. Shut that Casino down. It's not the casino I voted for years ago. It was suppose to be for charity.

The "sweeter deal" for Toronto, will likely, be made up by taking more money from places like Thunder Bay, Point Edward, Sault Ste Marie and Brantford.

Then again the patrons of the OLG Thunder Bay Casino, have demonstrated, that they are more then willing to part with their pension cheque/disability cheque or pay cheque.

Maybe if the city had something else going for themselves, they wouldn't have to rely on the Casino....which people seem to hate, except when its time for the slot revenues

Doesn't anyone thinks it's the Mayor's job to at least try help us as a City to secure a better deal?? I wonder what all the whiners would say if he had no comment on or any desire to at least try..

I wouldn't worry about the Whiner Brigade in here. They don't represent public opinion. Last election these same people were saying everyone but the mayor was going to get demolished. So basically flip what you read and it's probably closer to the truth.

Of the four or five times Ive spent money in this casino, Im always taken aback by the sea of solemn faces at the machines. It almost seems like a lot of people should have a sign on them saying "Help Me".
I hope these people are able to get the help they need before it's too late. Maybe a larger cut from the province could help the city deal with potential social problems ?
