No financial help for Buchanan Group if Longlac mill re-opens: Gravelle

The Minister of Northern Development says there will be no financial assistance for the Buchanan Group if it reopens the idled Longlac Sawmill.

The Minister of Northern Development says there will be no financial assistance for the Buchanan Group if it reopens the idled Longlac Sawmill.

Michael Gravelle says he expects a number of shuttered sawmills to reopen in the next little while and that could include Buchanan owned properties in Longlac and Nakina.

The renamed Long Lake Forest Products has applied to the province for a license to operate a sawmill in Longlac.

Discussions are also ongoing between Buchanan and the Birla Group, which last year purchased and re-opened Terrace Bay Pulp.

Gravelle says there is a need for sawmills now that the Terrace Bay mill is open and the U.S. housing market is on the upswing.

Greenstone Mayor Ron Beaulieu says the Municipality wants to see the sawmill re-open and he hears it could create up to 300 jobs.
