Police are asking all drivers to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary as a spring blizzard blankets the city.

Thunder Bay Police Service Traffic Sgt. Glen Porter said driving conditions are nasty Friday.

Visibility is getting worse and smaller vehicles have been getting stuck at intersections.

“People are getting out and trying to push them out and that’s causing hazardous conditions,” Porter said, adding people also need to remember to stop at stop signs and red lights despite the weather.

“I guess the drivers are afraid they’re going to get stuck and they’re blowing through stops signs and red lights.  It’s messy out there,” he said.

The winds have also blown traffic lights off of poles.

“If you’re going to drive, you have to remember you’ve got to be on your game today. Be careful. Slow down,” Porter said.

OPP are also reporting that Highway 11/17 is completely shut down from Thunder Bay to Ignace and the Highway 11/17 junction near Nipigon is closed to westbound traffic.

OPP have also closed Highway 102 because of road conditions

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for the city with another five centimetres expected to fall. The snowfall is expected to continue throughout the day then end by the evening.

OPP are urging people to refraining from driving until the storm passes.

For more information on road conditions call 511. Police are reminding residents that 911 is for emergencies only.

Traffic at the Thunder Bay International Airport has seen some cancellations and delays. Serveral morning and afternoon Bearskin Airlines and Wasaya Airways flights have been cancelled.
