Thunder Bay’s disaster relief fund could be getting more from the province than originally thought.
The city, along with the Thunder Bay Disaster Relief Committee, was stunned recently to learn that the provincial government would be contributing $300,000 to the relief fund. That was significantly lower that what some had hoped for.
Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath demanded answers from the governing Liberals during question period at Queen’s Park Monday.
The response from Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Linda Jeffrey alluded to the possibility that the province could be contributing more than the $300,000 currently promised.
“I plan to be in Thunder Bay later this week to talk with the mayor and councillors to make sure that we have the receipts that we need because at the end of the day we have an auditor general,” Jeffrey said. “We have to provide the paperwork, but we want to be there to help that community.
“We understand that when you are in the middle of a crisis that you try to reimburse your community. (Ontario has) made substantial investments and we continue to do that because we want to make sure this community gets back on its feet as quickly as possible.”
