The long-awaited sale of the former Marathon Pulp mill has been given approval by the Ministry of the Environment.

The pulp mill was operated by Tembec before shutting down in 2009, putting more than 200 people out of work.

U.S.-based Green Investment Group has worked out a deal with Tembec to buy the facility and use it to produce alternative fuels.

The sale hinged on MOE approval, and contains two main conditions.

GIG must post a $6 million assurance to the MOE to cover potential environmental clean-ups in the future.  And the director's orders previously issued to Tembec will now be transferred to GIG.

The public has 30 days to review the plan on the province's Environmental Registry website.

There's no word on when GIG hopes to start up its new operation.
